The Arizona SciTech Festival’s mission is to promote STEM education while highlighting its impacts in everyday life. It offers Arizona residents a myriad of informal education opportunities aimed at building awareness and engagement, including hands-on experiences that give children and adults alike a new perspective on the prevalence and importance of STEM. The goal is to inspire them to pursue related fields of study and STEM-related careers. The Foundation partners with the Arizona Commerce Authority, Arizona Board of Regents, Arizona State University, The University of Arizona, the Arizona Technology Council, the Arizona Science Center and community sponsors to support the “official” Festival celebration between February and March. Engagement opportunities continue throughout the year for many of the activities as well.In 2018, 800+ STEM Ecosystem organizers hosted over 2,000+ events, including 35+ regional community festivals, in 80 cities and towns throughout Arizona engaging 500,000+ visitors. In 2019, more than 900 organizers hosted over 3,000+ events, including 35+ regional community festivals, in 80 cities and towns throughout Arizona (see map), engaging 560,000+ visitors! These events have made the Arizona SciTech Festival the third largest STEM celebration in the nation for more than 4 years

The Chief Science Officer (CSO) program (https://chiefscienceofficers.org/) is the brainchild of SciTech Institute Executive Director Dr. Jeremy Babendure (https://scitechinstitute.org/). As lead of the nation’s 3rd largest science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) celebration, the Arizona SciTech Festival, Dr. Babendure realized that despite students being a primary audience, they were rarely included in conversations on what the Festival’s STEM activities and experiences should be. He also found that the stereotype that STEM topics are “hard, boring, and uncool” prevailed, thereby reducing student STEM identification and engagement and undermining the state’s efforts to create a diverse pipeline of qualified STEM leaders and workers to meet economic growth. This sparked the idea of putting students at the center of STEM promotion and community action. What would happen, he wondered, if students could choose peers to be their STEM advocate to help select and develop their school’s STEM programming? What if they could expand these opportunities to their communities or engage in local and state conversations on education and the workforce? He speculated that the STEM landscape and workforce pipeline would perhaps be more effective with students embedded in developing and leading these efforts. The rapid expansion and growth of the program is proving this to be the case.Building on the student government model, CSOs are 6-12th grade STEM leaders elected by their peers to promote STEM. In schools, CSOs advocate for and provide STEM experiences responsive to their peers’ interests. In the community, they serve as thought leaders and ambassadors, working with school boards, government, business, and industry to promote STEM awareness and engagement. Notably, the program empowers youth to chart their own STEM trajectory, provides opportunities for developing science capital and a STEM identity, and expands STEM access for historically marginalized populations (e.g., underserved, at-risk, and underrepresented). Leadership training prepares them not only for their roles but for an ever-increasing global workforce. It engenders self-assurance and provides the tools and knowledge youth need to become STEM advocates in their local communities and beyond. Mentors and coaches support youth development.
The program’s potential for broad impacts has encouraged significant growth since its 2015 inception. The number of CSOs has increased by 538% from 138 to 880, from one state (AZ) to ten (AZ, DE, FL, GA, MI, NJ, NY, OR, PA, TX), and one country (USA) to five (USA, Mexico, Kenya, Nepal, India, and Columbia). Importantly, interest continues to build with groups in both current and new regions planning to grow or launch the program within the next 5 years. To facilitate effective implementation across divergent locales and increase both program and CSO impacts, the CSO program team is working with regional leads to identify successful scaling elements. For example, partnerships with organizations such as the Teen Science Café Network (TSCN) and Tallo, an online workforce connection platform, are being piloted to determine if these types of mechanisms offer impactful STEM opportunities for CSOs and their peers as well as provide partners a strategy for scaling interventions. In addition, fidelity criteria (processes, procedures, and protocols), tools (IT, communication, data collection) and key performance indicators (KPIs) are continually being developed and revised to ensure that the program is meeting its goals. Outcomes, such as CSO STEM identity, STEM career interest, leadership and workforce skills development, and increased STEM interest and awareness for peers and community members, among others, are tracked and evaluated. The overall goal is to nurture a diverse STEM workforce pipeline and encourage lifelong STEM interest and engagement for future generations.

Mentors/advisors and young entrepreneurs can end their matches at any time.
REQUIREMENTS
Ability to quickly create a trusting relationship founded on the right intentions, recognizing the respect you show to your young entrepreneur and the confidence our young people place in you.

Patience and empathy to "get in the shoes" of our young entrepreneurs, identifying and providing the support that they need when they need it.
Ability to appropriately break down business strategy and effectively communicate with young entrepreneurs, while understanding your role as a mentor, not an owner.
