Join a passionate team of volunteers travelling to Nairobi, Kenya. Goals are to:- Work on a documentary of life in Mathare, the second largest slum in Kenya
- visit potential locations for a community center for women and Children
- Research the costs of buying and building a community centre for grant application
- Meet with the community to discuss the community programs need in Mathare

We offer a text support line where anyone in the US can connect via text or web chat to a trained peer counselor, providing immediate, confidential support at critical work moments.
Volunteering with Us
Since the start of the pandemic the number of people reaching out for support has skyrocketed. From people dealing directly with the effects of the pandemic, to those in the midst of job searches or with already difficult relations with managers, the current situation has heightened work-related anxiety and stress. Peer counselors are needed now more than ever!
When you sign up to volunteer with Empower Work by completing our online application, you will receive robust training and practice (~30 hours worth) that will prepare you to support the help seekers that reach out to us. We administer cohort style training for our volunteers, meaning that you get to learn alongside a consistent community of volunteers-in-training for 8 weeks. Our peer counseling training is based on coaching fundamentals, including establishing trust, active listening, powerful questioning, and forward momentum. We also delve into management, employee rights, and workplace dynamics.
In addition to the training, our volunteers must commit to 50 hours of service on the text line, with at least 2 hours a week. Once training is completed and you are promoted to Certified Peer Counselor, you will begin signing up for 2 hour long peer counseling shifts based on your availability each week between 7am and 7pm PST, Monday through Friday.
It’s a big commitment which can be hugely rewarding as you help people at crucial moments while developing your own skills and joining a growing, incredible community of volunteers.
Impact
Peer counselors report a deep sense of fulfillment helping others, and a feeling of reward in developing their skills, which in turn helps them to excel in their own jobs. Our volunteers report that their skills in active listening, creating space for emotions, and helping others find solutions to their own problems are invaluable in their own jobs and lives.

The mission trip to South Africa gives us the opportunity to meet the physical and spiritual needs of a community that is desperately in need. We conduct workshops and gospel meetings, distribute bibles, clothing, and much needed eye-readers, Feed the TB and HIV patients, provide a children's program and provide medical care for the Reiger Park community. We leave all medical supplies in South Africa for the one clinic they have in the community. This clinic is able to provide ongoing care to the community from the supplies we leave. This work is important because it helps meet the medical needs of the community and it helps to educate and empower the plethora of children in this poor community to become the difference the world will see and to become successful in life and give back to the community so that others can become the difference the world will see to create substanibility.Available Shifts
