SocialTech Lab, in collaboration with Microsoft and FINOMENA, is gearing up to co-host a regional hackathon in April of this year. The event will bring together a cohort of 20-30 talented computer science students from Cyprus and Palestine at The Base by CyprusInno, SocialTech Lab’s innovation center in Cyprus' UN Buffer Zone.

Over the course of three action-packed days, some of the brightest minds from Cyprus and Palestine will team up in Cyprus’ capital of Nicosia to leverage Azure AI/ML (including Open AI, cognitive search, etc.) to develop innovative solutions for challenges sources from local Cypriot (EU registered) enterprises.

The participating students from Cyprus and Palestine will be selected based on their academic performance, coding skills, and motivation. Once selected, they will be encouraged to form teams that merge their diverse skill sets and experiences for this hackathon.

During the hackathon, they will have the opportunity to learn from mentors from Microsoft and SocialTech Lab, as well as from the founders of the Cypriot enterprises that will present their challenges for the hackathon. The students will also get to experience the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem of Cyprus, as well as network with peers.

The hackathon will culminate in a final pitch event where the teams will present their prototypes to a panel of judges. The winning team will receive a selection of prizes, as well as ongoing mentorship and support from Microsoft and SocialTech Lab to further develop their solution.

The hackathon is expected to foster cross-cultural exchange, collaboration, and innovation
among Palestinian and Cypriot youth – and will be paired with cultural experiences and knowledge-sharing to create long-lasting friendships outside of “coding” hours.

We hope that this initiative will showcase the potential of technology to address social and economic challenges, as well as inspire more partnerships and projects between the two communities in the future.
