Protecting Women and Youth on the Frontlines of the Crisis in Togo: An Urgent Call for Solidarity

For over two years, northern Togo — particularly the Savanes region — has been the scene of escalating violent extremism. Armed groups have increased their incursions, forcing hundreds of families to flee their villages, causing the disintegration of social structures and plunging the most vulnerable into insecurity and fear.
But the threat is not only coming from armed groups. In recent weeks, Togo has also been shaken by popular protests that were harshly repressed, resulting in serious injuries, mass arrests, and documented cases of torture. In this climate of tension and insecurity, women and youth are doubly exposed: on one hand to terrorist violence, and on the other to political repression and instability.
In the face of this dramatic situation, AJEAH (Association des Jeunes Engagés pour l’Action Humanitaire) is taking action on the ground. In 2024, it implemented a women's resilience project in the most affected areas, funded by the Urgent Africa Fund, with tangible results:
• Psychosocial support for displaced and traumatized women,
• Raising awareness among youth about peace, non-violence, and social cohesion,
• Creating community support groups led by female leaders.
However, today, the funding for this project has ended, while the crisis continues to intensify. AJEAH has made the brave decision to remain alongside the communities, despite the lack of financial support.
The goal of this campaign is to raise €25,000 in order to:
• Maintain a mobile team on the ground to provide psychosocial support to displaced women and youth,
• Cover transportation, security, and local office operating costs,
• Support the female leaders already trained so they can continue their fieldwork,
• Continue awareness-raising in high-risk areas to prevent radicalization and strengthen social cohesion.
This campaign is much more than a call for donations:
It is an act of solidarity with abandoned communities,
A way to preserve the gains of local peace,
And a concrete response to security breaches and systemic violence.
By donating today, you become a key player in resilience.
Your support helps maintain peace where it is most fragile.
Your generosity saves lives.

That is where the ‘Back to School’ kits come in, by putting together supplies of stationery and workbooks you’re helping to ensure our community can kick off the coming academic year with everything they need to focus on achieving their goals!

Calling All Volunteers!
We're looking for up to 12 volunteers to help us make Summerfest a fun, unforgettable event for our families and children at our Elm Supportive Housing program at YWCA Toronto.

Here’s how you can jump in and make a difference:

Volunteers to support grilling (3 volunteers)
Fire up the BBQ and help us serve up delicious hot dogs and hamburgers to families and children

Food Station volunteers (3 volunteers)
Be the friendly face behind the serving table—help us keep the line moving and plates full for the families and children.

🎨 Face Painting Artists (2 volunteers)
Bring color and creativity to the day—no pro skills needed, just a steady hand and a love for fun!

🏸 Lawn Game Leaders (4 volunteers)
Keep the energy high by running classic lawn games and cheering on our players of all ages.

We have our annual Summerfest each year, and the families and children at Elm always look forward to it! It is a very important event that celebrates the community at Elm Supportive Housing. Due to circumstances, many families may be unable to afford typical summer activities - which is why we do our best to host a Summerfest event for all people at Elm Housing.

Budget request: we kindly ask a donation of $500 dollars in order to host this event. Unfortunately, we do not have funds to host the event ourselves. And, without a donation or volunteers - we would be unable to host Summerfest for our program participants at Elm. All given funds will be going towards food, drinks and snacks for the families and children at our Elm Supportive Housing.

We ask that volunteers wear closed-toed footwear, and comfortable shoes - as they may be standing on their feet for long periods of time. It is recommended that volunteers wear loose, comfortable summer clothing. Or volunteers can wear BMO t-shirts if they are available from work. Volunteers may be asked to lift some heavy items like cases of water or other items.

We would be so grateful if volunteers can support this event!

Submission Date: July 2nd, 2025

Project Overview

We invite BMO employees to join us at MONOVA: Museum & Archives of North Vancouver for a hands-on volunteer opportunity supporting our Wool Weaving Program: an initiative designed to educate youth and local community members about the history and ongoing revitalization of traditional Coast Salish Wool Weaving.

Volunteers will assist with assembling wool weaving kits that will be utilized for school groups as part of MONOVA’s fall educational programming. These kits provide tangible, culturally respectful ways for students to engage with Coast Salish artistry, oral storytelling, and community tradition throughout the academic year. This in-person volunteer opportunity will enable BMO to support MONOVA in our mission to create engaging and educational experiences to reflect on our past, understand our present, and build our future together.

This project is part of a larger celebration within MONOVA that honours the resurgence of wool weaving within the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səl̓ílwətaɬ First Nations. It is designed in consultation with Indigenous educators and knowledge keepers. Striving to connect the stories of North Vancouver’s past, present, and future, MONOVA aims to foster dialogue, deepen understanding, and reflect the diversity of the lands on which we operate. BMO employees will support the hands-on side of this work, supporting Indigenous-led knowledge sharing and youth cultural education in a direct and impactful way.

Volunteer Date & Details
Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2025 Shift Options:
Shift 1: 10 AM – 12 PM
Shift 2: 2 PM - 4 PM
Number of Volunteers: Up to 30 BMO employees total (15 per shift)
Location: 115 West Esplanade, North Vancouver, BC (Fully accessible venue; nearby parking and transit options available)

Volunteer Tasks Will Include:
- Organizing and sorting wool and weaving supplies
- Assembling and packaging education kits
- Labelling and preparing kits for distribution
- Light inventory tracking
- Orientation will be provided at the start of each shift

Budget Request
We respectfully request $1,500 in project funding to directly support the quality and integrity of the cultural education kits delivered to North Van students. Funding will be used to:
- Purchase wool and packaging materials
- Print instructional and cultural context sheets
- Cover supply and logistical support costs
- Provide honoraria to Indigenous advisors who have contributed to kit development

This funding will directly support MONOVA’s ability to deliver culturally respectful teachings and programming to schools across North Vancouver during the 2025-2026 academic year, extending the impact of BMO’s support beyond this one-day event. With BMO’s support, we can bring to life the powerful stories of the Coast Salish people through high-quality programs. Thank you for considering our application. We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with BMO to deliver meaningful, community-driven volunteerism.

Warmly,
Emmanuela Droko
