Imagine that by volunteering time and talent as a mentor, Microsoft’s employee matching program can add up to enough funding to put a girl through college in Kenya, Rwanda and India! The Global Give Back Circle is a circle of empowerment propelled by women from all parts of the globe who give back time and talent to girls from marginalized communities; amazing girls who refuse to accept the hand destiny tried to deal them. This is accomplished through a long distance mentoring process, driven by role model women mentors who empower girls to realize their dreams and goals while coaching them on the implementation of give back commitments to their communities.
While in high school, each girl is assigned a dedicated mentor who writes to her on a regular basis, encourages her in her studies, helps her explore possibilities and helps her realize her full potential as a global citizen.
While no previous mentoring experience is required, it is important that mentors commit to send at least two thoughtful letters/emails each month for at least one year – ideally for much, much longer. It is quite typical for mentors and mentees to communicate more frequently than twice a month, as the relationship deepens and a mentor’s advice and guidance are actively sought by the mentee.
Mentors are asked to complete a short application, read and agree to the mentor rights, responsibilities and rules, and commit to log their mentoring hours each month to help offset the cost of their mentee's college education.
The average mentoring/volunteer commitment is 1 hour a week. If you share our passion in wanting to help a girl realize global citizenship through mentoring, please apply via our website at: http://www.globalgivebackcircle.org/get-involved/mentor-a-girl/ for an application and a complete overview of the program and mentoring journey.

The Assistance League of the Bay Area runs the program Operation School Bell in partnership with four area school districts in Harris and Galveston Counties in TX. Operation School Bell is a program where partner schools refer students in need with new, school appropriate clothing to the Assistance League of the Bay Area. Each student (preK 3 yr old through high school seniors) receives 5 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, underwear, socks, a hygiene kit, and a Payless voucher for shoes From the Assistance League of the Bay Area.We believe it is important for students to have new, appropriate school clothes so they may have a good self-esteem and be prepared for learning versus worrying about how they appear to those around them.
This particular volunteer opportunity is an offsite dressing day where the Assistance League of the Bay Area brings the clothing, etc. to Rizzuto Elementary School in La Porte, TX during their preK registration day. We come to the school because many of the families don't have transportation to our distribution center and/or because this is their first experience in the school system do not understand the process.
The students/families will come throughout the day to complete the qualification process for PreK schooling. If they qualify and are deemed in need by the school personnel, they will be referred to the Operation School Bell area to be dressed. Assistance League of the Bay Area members and community volunteers will then assist the students with filling out paperwork, being fit with clothing, and checking out. Volunteers may also assist with set-up and tear down.
We anticipate dressing 150-200 students during the day.

Let’s Change the Future for Mount Vernon Youth!
The Mount Vernon Technology & Science Youth Center for Advancement
The Challenge
For many reasons, children in Mount Vernon are falling behind at an alarming and accelerating rate as they progress through the school system’s various milestones. The outlook for them is bleak unless we successfully intervene and interrupt this downward spiral. Evidence, including state standardized test scores, suggests they are not prepared for participation in our global economy, especially regarding STEM-based subject matter. The results are and will continue to be a community with higher than average poverty, unemployment and crime.
The Mission
Our mission is to introduce the marvels of science to children on a systematic, frequent and regularly scheduled basis, enabling them to experience, explore and personalize the resulting discoveries. Science centers embedded in the community, embraced by the school system and freely available to children, parents and teachers alike have proven to be successful interveners needed in the metropolitan areas around the country. We seek to duplicate and expand the success of those centers in Mount Vernon.
The Center
Our vision of success includes directly impacting the lives of the 9,000 underserved students attending public school in Mount Vernon each year with a state-of-the-art facility that is embraced by current and succeeding generations of students, parents, the school system and the surrounding corporate community. Our facility will impact academic studies and outcomes and influence career choices for years to come, further validating the community value and impact of such well-thought-out initiatives for urban areas.
“Above all we need, particularly as children, the reassuring presence of a visible community, an intimate group that enfolds us with understanding and love, and that becomes an object of our spontaneous loyalty, as a criterion and point of reference for the rest of the human race.”
—Lewis Mumford
The rewards are endless so if you are willing and ready to help us make a difference, please contact Gerald Dennis, campaign director, at 914-888-7556 or gdennis@mvtsc.org.
