Volunteer with any of the Ekal Canada regional chapters or Head Office and work on raising awareness, fundraising, social media, local community events, website maintenance, support groups, data management, news and events, youth engagement, donor outreach, corporate relations etc.

Ekal is a registered Canadian charity engaged in the education of tribal, indigenous children in rural India and Nepal. Ekal runs 80,000 schools that help educate over 2 million underprivileged children in rural, remote parts of India. It is the largest grassroots movement for rural education in the world.

The Ekal movement aims to eradicate illiteracy from tribal areas of India and Nepal through rural development based on the criteria of equality, diversity and inclusion across all sections of society. A contribution of CAD $700 helps run one Ekal school for an entire year, educates 30 children and has a positive impact on 30 rural families.

Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of Canada, a not-for-profit organization, was registered as an Ontario Corporation in 2006 and attained charitable status in 2007. Charity Registration Number (Canada) is 853421162RR0001. Ekal's mission is the holistic development of villages through the empowerment of tribal and rural communities in India with basic education, digital literacy, skill development, health awareness, sustainable agricultural practices and rural entrepreneurship.

We have regional chapters located in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, London, Windsor, Ottawa etc. Ekal is now active in over 10 countries including the United States of America, Thailand, UAE, New Zealand, Britain, Canada and Australia. At the time of independence, India’s literacy rate was a staggering 11%. Since then, it has made tremendous strides in educating its people. Present-day, the literacy rate stands at 68% for the indigenous and rural Indian population - well below the world average literacy rate of 84%. The tribal inhabitants live in remote areas, far from major cities. Those areas are highly deprived of basic amenities, modern facilities for youth and even basic infrastructure. In this scenario, the Ekal movement emerged as the most pragmatic solution to this national need.

Junior Achievement’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed. The inspiration piece comes from community volunteers who not only deliver our lessons, but share their experience. In the process, these volunteers serve as role models helping to positively impact young people’s perceptions about the importance of education, as well as critical life skills. Preparation involves our proven lessons that promote financial capability, work and career readiness, and business ownership.
All it takes is five 45-minute sessions in a classroom. Sessions usually occur once a week, but the actual dates and time would be scheduled with the teacher.
Junior Achievement would provide you the training and guidance you'll need to remotely teach Kindergarten through 5th grade students. All sessions must be finished before the end of school (on or before May 19, 2023).
