Opportunity Details

Volunteers will be helping the LADO committee with hosting a dinner/auction. They will be serving drinks and desserts, helping guests to their seats, and clearing tables for guests.

Our ministry feeds the people of Berrugas, Colombia! Not only do we feed them physically but spiritually. Our ministry seeks out the lost people in the community and teaches them about the our Lord's love for them. The ministry is currently working on a Preschool Feeding Program, Sports School, Music School and Medical Clinic. These programs will allow us to feed the young children who other wise don't get proper nourishment, helps keep the young children off the streets and allows us to help those who need medical attention.

Many families in Kentucky and beyond struggle with access to the farm fresh food we ALL need to be happy and healthy. As a result, one out of five Kentuckians are faced with debilitating chronic food-related illnesses, many which are preventable with a diet rich with fruits and vegetables.

Fresh Stop Markets (FSM)-New Roots' main initiative-are run by volunteer leaders who believe that fresh food is a basic human right. New Roots helps to orchestrate the markets in tandem with our community leaders. FSMs are volunteer, community-driven farm-fresh food markets that pop up bi-weekly at local churches, community centers, and businesses in fresh food insecure neighborhoods. "Shareholders" are not just "customers." They are the volunteer leaders that run and sustain each and every FSM. Shareholders commit to pay ahead of time, on a sliding scale, for ten varieties of seasonal, local, organic produce that can then be picked up at a given time and day, at one of the 17 different Kentucky and southern Indiana Markets. Twelve are in the Louisville Metro Area, three in Lexington, one in Brandenburg, and one in Hazard. In 2018, we are embarking on a pilot to replicate the model in other communities.

By committing to pay ahead of time, shareholders pool their resources together in a form of cooperative economics, building enough buying power to purchase at wholesale prices from farmers. The shareholders' financial commitment ensures that farmers don't face the same degree of risk as with traditional farmers' markets. The sliding scale means food is affordable and everyone is included. At every Market a volunteer chef hosts a cooking demonstration with the same produce that shareholders bring home.
