The Basketball Embassy, is a local non-profit centered around using the sport of basketball as a unifier for people from different backgrounds, as well as encouraging the growth of emerging leaders and fostering an environment that helps to build community by sharing the universal language of basketball. We need your help…we can’t do what we do without you! We are currently looking for schools/coaches/players that would be interested in coming out to Haven for Hope or SAMMinistries and running a short practice with the homeless children that live there.
Haven for Hope is a local campus that aims to address the root causes of homelessness by offering a wide range of programs to these individuals. If you want to read more about what Haven for Hope does, you can visit this link: https://www.havenforhope.org/about/our-approach/
SAMMinistries is an interfaith ministry that offers shelter, housing, and services to the at-risk and homeless population in San Antonio. If you want to read more about what SAMM does, you can visit this link: https://www.samm.org/learn/how-we-help/
The practices are held weekly on Monday at 6pm & Wednesday at 7pm at SAMM and Tuesday & Thursday at 6pm at Haven for Hope. They run just about every week, so in terms of when you could participate, it could be whenever you or your team would be available! Ideally, we would like to have the coach, along with a few players or even just the coaches or just the players, to help lead a session. Who you bring and when you come is entirely up to you.
If you are interested at all in participating, please fill out this form (https://meetings.hubspot.com/eellis4) with the date you would be available to come out and we can get back to you with more information.
If you got this far, thank you for taking the time to read this and for your interest in The Basketball Embassy. Feel free to forward this message and/or form to anyone you think may be interested. In the meantime, if I can answer any questions or clear up anything for you, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Supporting children and helping them reach their full potential is essential. Destiny’s Daughters of Promise (DDP) is preparing youth, with an emphasis on teen girls, to thrive in their purpose, lead with confidence, and excel in the workforce. Our vision is to form strong alliances with local schools and extend our reach to impact a larger number of girls. Our programming includes “life-ready skills” as well as academic support and civic engagement activities to promote a sense of purpose. Beginning in September 2023, our organization will launch a new project to help students consider their interest in a future career to better meet the needs of our program participants. Youth need direction, opportunities, and inspiration. They also need role models to help them learn the skills they need to achieve success. DDP is offering youth so much more than just ways to stay out of trouble. Based on our longitudinal data results, we are changing the trajectory of the lives of youth forever. The investment in our program allows us to maximize our efforts and the number of youths we can help to thrive. Your support will help us in our efforts.DDP works directly with teen girls who are most at risk of choosing a lifestyle that could promote teen pregnancy, delinquency or lead them to drop out of school completely. Most of the time, the students we serve do not see a way out of their current situations or know there might be other lifestyles and futures to consider. In addition, we are in an area in Metro-Atlanta whose school district is the 2nd largest in Georgia. The teachers and staff of the area schools don’t have time to provide extra support to their students in need or those students who are “most at risk”.
We are seeking qualified professionals in the below areas to provide support as career focused mentors virtually once per month.
Engineering, Manufacturing, & Technology
Medical, Health Science
Law, Public Safety
Politics
Human/Social services
Education
Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources
Communication, Media
Business, Management, & Administration
Arts and Entertainment
Some examples of the assistance provided include aiding youth with the following:
• Writing resumes and cover letters
• Conducting mock interviews and providing support for answering interview questions
• Exploring possible careers and assisting with job, internship, or program searches
• Developing on-the-job skills (soft skills or technical skills)
• Modeling behavior, attitudes, or skills in the workplace (job-shadowing
• Career planning and goal setting
According to The Student Research Foundation, 71% of students in high school say their interests are what drive their career path, as well as the caring adults in their lives. In addition, researchers in a 2016 publication called “Interest Matters: The Importance of Promoting Interest in Education”, determined that “Interest is a powerful motivational process that energizes learning, guides academic and career trajectories, and is essential to academic success.” Therefore, by defining their own interests, the students will be more apt to continue a path that will empower them to live a life of bold success rather than the negative lifestyle they may currently be surrounded by.
Our organization will continue to serve our area's at-risk teen girls by offering valuable life-ready skills as well as positive mentoring by caring adults. We aim to assist girls to seek a life of bold success by providing positive motivation so they can move past feeling like their current situation offers no hope. By having the girls in the program explore career possibilities more in depth at the beginning of the program year, they can identify those fields they feel passionate about and those they don’t. The girls can then work with their mentors during the year and focus on the life-ready skills that apply to their chosen career goals.
The impact we are hoping this program will have on children in need is providing continued opportunities for youth to become contributing members of society. We want them to have the skills needed to prove to themselves and to their community that they have a lot to give and that they are productive, important participants.
If you are interested in serving as a career focused mentor, please submit your resume to us at info@ddpgirls.org.
