More than 15 million visitors enjoy the scenic journey of the Blue Ridge Parkway each year. With stagnant and declining funding from the government, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s support has become essential to preserve and protect the historical, cultural, and natural resources found along the 469-mile route. From maintenance and facility improvement projects to protecting threatened species, we work closely with the Parkway staff to enhance visitor experiences. Philanthropic and volunteer efforts are vital to support this unit of the National Park System. There are many ways you can help, including giving your time.

Invasive species removal Workday at Waimea Valley

This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of our Waimea Valley Volunteers Team and help us care for the many species of plants and animals that we protect.

You will be in the main valley working amongst the botanical gardens, Hawaiian Cultural sites and Native Species habitats to help the conservation department clear invasive species.

An RSVP is required.

Work goes from 9am to 3pm and can include: Native habitat restoration and Invasive species removal.

Where:

Meet at Waimea Valley Botanical Office and be ready to leave for the hike at 9am

Location Details:

When you arrive at the Valley entrance road, go mauka (towards the mountains) and park in any of the regular parking lots. Then continue walking mauka from there to the Botanical office. It will be up the road to the left of the Visitor center. If you see a sign that says endangered species 'alae ula crossing keep going up that way. If you are having trouble finding your way, go to the front desk in the visitor center, let them know you are here to volunteer and ask to be directed towards the botanical offices, they can help you.



What:

We will be visiting various locations within the Waimea valley botanical gardens. These are easy to moderate trails and the longest it should take to get to a work site will be around 30 minutes. We will be doing conservation work to care for and protect the rare or endangered species of plants and animals in our valley.



** We will provide all tools and have gloves available to borrow. We ask that you do not bring tools from home, but you are welcome to bring personal gloves**



How Many:

We are looking for a maximum of about 30 people for any given date.

RSVP in advance to reserve your spot.



What Age:

Ages 12 and up are invited to attend, but any volunteers under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian go with them to volunteer.



What to bring:

Water (at least 1 liter) (Recommended)

Lunch (may also be purchased from our snack shop)

Gloves

Rain gear

Insect repellent (mosquitos can be quite pervasive in some areas)

Close toed Shoes (REQUIRED)

Sun screen

Hat

Long pants

Long sleeved shirt

A Face mask (recommended for areas where crowds may gather)

A Positive Attitude!



Terrain:

The terrain is easy to moderate for Waimea Valley, but you will need to be able to walk to and from the volunteer locations and perform the work.

** There are some locations that can get quite hot, it pays to come prepared!**

We are hosting our first annual adult prom "Escape to Old Hollywood" is a benefit to help us raise funds for our annual teens prom for local tri-county area teens battling cancer. This unique opportunity will be one to remember, and give the South Florida community a chance to experience what we do first hand. Our teens prom is held annually at no cost to the kids or their families. The kids are treated like movie stats as they arrive in limousines, walk the red carpet, and dance the night away. CrowdDoing Grantwriting Program Management Volunteers help CrowdDoing to secure support for internal and external social innovations in service of all stakeholders in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals through grantwriting. Our service learning grantwriting micro-leadership volunteering aims to comprehensively research, and develop grant applications, coordinate with other project managers working on specific grants and coordinate mini-grant teams, and coordinate around Letters of Inquiry for grants for CrowdDoing.

We need people who would be willing to collect unused food for us on an evening from a variety of shops and deliver to our centre where the food is used to make meals to feed the homeless and those in poverty and also to pass on to families living below the poverty line to feed themselves and their children.

Our centre is currently overflowing with lots of donated items such as, bedding, clothing, toiletries, food and Christmas presents.

We can hardly move around in our little office and so we are having to store items in the main area where we serve our meals to our service users.

Indie Meme, has been building communities around film for the past 4 years. We do this by showcasing South Asian Indie Documentary & Fiction Films and their filmmakers like the real stars that they are!

We work with people who display passion about Indie Films and we are the one who wishes that there were amazing award-winning films from South Asia and we need to screen them in our Austin city. Yes, you are making a positive difference to the lives of others and this will be the start of a richly rewarding volunteering experience.

We wrap up 2017 with the screening of "Newton" Directed by Amit Masurkar and starring Rajkummar Rao, Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi, Raghubir Yadav.

We can use help at the theatre to set, greet, sell movie tickets, talk about the non-profit, sell memberships, answer general questions, basically anything and everything you can think of!
