On September 14, the Mark Twain House will be celebrating its 150th birthday, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to help us mark this momentous occasion. From 10am – 5pm, we will be hosting a fun-filled day of activities to commemorate this historic home where Samuel and Olivia Clemens raised their family. Construction began in August 1873, after the Clemens' hired New York architect Edward Tuckerman Potter to design their Hartford, CT, house. Although not fully completed, Sam and Oliva moved their family into the home on Farmington Avenue on September 19, 1874, where they would live until 1891. The author would later call these years the happiest and most productive of his life.

Join us for storytelling, crafts, musical performances, animals, special appearances, and so much more!

Volunteers are needed all around our campus to help with activities. Volunteers will be emailed their assignments a few days before the event, along with details such as parking, what to wear, etc. A volunteer hospitality room will be available all day with snacks, water, etc.

Held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day” when entrance fees are waived at national parks and public lands.

On Friday, September 27, 2024, WATTS will hold our inaugural golf tournament, The Walt Cunningham Memorial Golf Event, at Rock Harbor Golf Course in Winchester, VA.
Check-in is at 8am; golfers tee off at 9am and should be done by 3pm.

We need volunteers to be out on the course monitoring contest holes. These volunteers must be age 18 or older. Knowledge of the game of golf is helpful, but not required.

Responsibilities include: sharing about the contest and encouraging golfers to participate; watching golfers tee-off to ensure appropriate yardage; attention to the green for verification if a hole-in-one would occur; possibility of having to sign a witness affidavit or make recorded statements to verify a hole-in-one.

Volunteers should plan to be outside for the duration of the event; dress for the weather (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, raincoat, etc.) Bring water, snacks, and a book if you'd like. We can pair you up on a hole, so get a friend to sign-up to volunteer as well.

WATTS will provide you with a volunteer t-shirt and a boxed lunch!

Join us and lend a hand as we raise money to break the cycle of homelessness one life at a time in Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke County. Your support is invaluable to us!
