Uganda loses on average 10 people per day in road traffic accidents. Our goal is to positively impact the high rate of road accident fatalities by creating a simple and easy-to-use platform that allows casualties to receive the urgent help that they need in time. World Action Fund has developed a comprehensive approach to this app development that would involve the participation of the public, police and medical centres. We’re ecstatic that you’re considering partnering with us, so let’s get started!Goal: Proposed timely pre-hospital care when administered can reduce injury severity and reduce the trend of road traffic injury deaths by saving lives, treating injuries efficiently and effectively, preventing infections and injury-related diseases as well as preventing disabilities. This is why some research has called for the establishment of structured and organized trauma care systems as one way of averting avoidable deaths in Kampala and else-where.
The time between someone suffering an accident and it´s being notified to an emergency service is fundamental to save lives. Several reports claim that 1 in 10 deaths could have been saved if an automatic notification system were implemented. With SafeTravel, an accident is notified in a matter of seconds allowing the user to quickly call emergencies which highly increases chances of survival of the victims with the reduced emergency response time.
With the SafeTravel application, once emergency contacts and first responders are notified of an accident, the time it takes for the casualty to receive the assistance they need is significantly reduced. The time in minutes/hours saved translates into the difference between losing or saving a life.
The app would automatically detect car accidents and send an SMS notification with the location of the car crash to emergency contacts that the user has previously selected, allowing them to call rescue services in no time. This enormously reduces the rescue time increasing the survival chances of casualties and saving thousands of lives every year.

The Mercy Table Five & Dime’s goal is to help someone get from one side of the table where they are needing resources, to being able to give resources to others. Through the Five & Dime, we provide $20 in Mercy “Bucks” to each family member to shop the store from 12pm-3pm freely without restrictions. This allows families to maintain their dignity as they shop without the strain of item and shopping time limits. Just like a real store the items in the store are priced, there is a cashier, and a bagger. The store allows us to help teach financial literacy through practical application. The bucks are limited to a certain amount to incentivize volunteering so families can learn the soft skills of working at a retail store. If a family feels like they do not have enough “bucks” they have the option to volunteer for $20 an hour in “bucks”. We believe, through volunteering you learn to give charitably and budget your time and resources appropriately to account for your own basic needs while also helping to improve your community. In addition, volunteering at the Five & Dime teaches soft skills such as communication, stress management, and conflict management. Communication skills are essential when a family has to go to the City office to speak with someone about obtaining food stamps or communicating with a caseworker to advocate for themselves and the support that they are receiving. Stress management skills help when families are standing in long lines at the food pantry or have to engage with law enforcement. Conflict management is imperative when living in less than desirable areas or when trying to maintain employment. These skills are essential for an individual who is trying to rebuild their life and the lives of their family.
The Five & Dime has been a safe haven for many people who are ashamed to admit they need help. It is our goal to help families maintain their dignity during the most difficult seasons of their lives. Not only are basic needs met, but the skills taught through the store have empowered families to advocate for themselves and show up in order to get to the other side of the table and break generational cycles of poverty.
