We are searching for volunteers to help support the operation of the collaborative Over the Edge: Williamsport event on Friday, Sept. 23, from 3-10 p.m. The event will run in conjunction with UPMC's block party that same evening and is an opportunity to engage in a community event. Over the Edge is a fundraising event between the WASD Education Foundation, River Valley Regional YMCA and YWCA Northcentral PA. Since 2018, the event has generated more than $275,000 to benefit the mission of each of the participating nonprofits.

This year, we have moved the event to a Friday evening so that our participants will have the opportunity to "descend with the sun," while also joining in with UPMC to create a fun and exciting atmosphere for families in the Williamsport area.

Purpose: Grocery Bringers help carry out the mission of the nonprofit Bringing Justice Home. Our mission:

To foster the health and wellness of medically vulnerable neighbors facing food insecurity through the delivery of groceries and household supplies and through offering social support; and to engage the community in the work of justice through education, shared resources, and building just relationships.

Grocery Bringers provide neighbors greater access to healthy, affordable food and household supplies, thereby increasing household food security while extending the dignity of choice. Grocery Bringers also make connections across the many boundary lines that often divide us, making our community stronger.

Location: Grocery Bringers pick up groceries and household supplies from Kroger stores and deliver them to the homes of neighbors who may reside in any metro Louisville zip code. Bringers also pick up food at our pantry storage unit and deliver it to neighbors. Bringers may also be asked to pick up food at Dare to Care Food Bank and other locations and deliver it to the storage facility or directly to neighbors’ homes.

Key Responsibilities: (Note: Groceries and supplies will be paid for by Bringing Justice Home. Bringers provide their own transportation with no reimbursement.)

Pick up groceries to deliver to one to two neighbors (usually two).

Go into Kroger to pick up one or two items if unavailable in the pickup order, when applicable. We can provide the funds for this.

Deliver groceries to the neighbor’s front door or carry groceries inside for neighbors who require this assistance.

Contact the neighbor to notify them of completed delivery if you are doing contact-free drop-off.

Protect our neighbors who have chronic health conditions and/or are immunocompromised by using precautions such as masking and social distancing to keep everyone safe.

Bring any voiced or observed needs or concerns back to Bringing Justice Home’s Executive Director for review.

Submit Delivery Feedback form after completing each delivery

Reports to: Executive Director

Length of Appointment: We hope you’ll be a part of our neighborhood forever! But we do ask you to commit to a 90-day period of service once you’re onboarded with us.

Time Commitment: Approximately one one-to-two-hour delivery shift per week.

Qualifications:

Willingness to serve without judgment those who may seem to be unlike yourself.

Willingness to travel in unfamiliar neighborhoods without judgment.

Compassion for helping those who are facing food insecurity due to unemployment, age, illness, disability, and other reasons.

Ability to use active listening skills to communicate and build relationships with our neighbors.

Personal transportation for deliveries with sufficient space for two grocery orders.

Access to cell phone, computer, and internet.

Ability to use email, texting, and/or phone calls for communication with neighbors and Executive Director and accessing necessary information for delivery

Ability to lift and carry bags or boxes of groceries and supplies and climb steps at homes/apartments. If you have limitations in this area, notify the Executive Director for accommodations.

Ability to commit to a 90-day trial period of service of approximately one one-to-two-hour delivery shift per week, Monday-Saturday.

Maintain confidentiality outside of Bringing Justice Home (you may share stories but not names, addresses, or other specifics).

Training:

Training will consist of a phone or video meeting to review details of the position. This will include a review of our non-discrimination policy, mission and vision, as well as job duties. There will also be a series of online modules to complete.

Age Requirement:

18 and older.

We welcome 16- to 17-year-olds, but they need parental permission and will not do solo deliveries. Teens and their delivery companions both need to complete the training process. If their delivery companion is an adult, they will need to complete a background check.

Screening:

Reference check

Provide names and contact information for two references

Background check

All adults 18 and up will complete a background check, initiated by Bringing Justice Home. It is assumed that you will complete the deliveries on your own. If you want adult family members or friends to accompany you, we love that! They will need to have background checks as well.

Benefits:
Being part of a supportive neighborhood that cares about the health and wellness of all members

The joy and satisfaction of making a substantial, meaningful difference in the lives of those who experience food insecurity

Building relationships with people you might not have otherwise met

Kroger Fuel Points for active volunteers

Ongoing training in topics such as food justice, just relationships, and more!
