Adolescent fertility rates in Rwanda highlight a sobering reality: around 13% of girls aged 19 have already given birth, and those who drop out of school face an even higher risk of pregnancy. This disrupts not only their education but also their future, restricting their opportunities and perpetuating cycles of poverty and hardship. Teen mothers often face severe health risks, unemployment, and limited opportunities for both themselves and their children. However, there is hope. This project aims to break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for both teen mothers and their children in Rwanda through a unique Two-Generation Approach. We focus on ensuring that young mothers can return to school, stay in school, and provide their children with the best possible start in life.
This project seeks to bring back to school 100 teen mothers who dropped out due to pregnancy and were unable to return because of poverty and social stigma. By providing the necessary resources, educational support, and social services, we aim to help them complete their education, improve their learning outcomes, and break free from the cycle of poverty.
In addition, 100 children born to these teen mothers will also receive support to ensure they reach their full potential. This includes early childhood development resources, proper nutrition, and educational tools designed to give them the best start in life, setting them on a path to success.
Why This Matters:
By investing in the education of both teen mothers and their children, we are investing in a brighter, more prosperous future for Rwanda. Education is the foundation of progress. However, without support, teen mothers face a precarious future, often forced to choose between caring for their child and continuing their education.
This project offers a solution by creating a supportive environment that allows young mothers to balance their academic aspirations with their responsibilities as mothers. Through educational resources, mentorship, and health support, these teen mothers will be empowered to finish their education, build a better future for themselves, and break the cycle of poverty that too often plagues young mothers and their children.

Detroit City Football Club Downriver will be hosting its 3rd Annual Golf Outing at Taylor Meadows Golf Club. Celebrating with supporters, we anticipate this signature event will provide endless opportunities for kids to participate in youth soccer within Southeast Michigan. Funds raised will go towards building a foundation of excellence in skill development, instilling confidence and leadership qualities on and off the field and, most importantly, to lessen the burden of any financial constraints, so every kid has the opportunity to follow their dreams and play the game of soccer.Since our inception in 1986, Detroit City Football Club Downriver has been dedicated to fostering the love of soccer and encouraging personal growth and development among our youth. As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, we proudly serve over 1,200 young players from southern Wayne County, and our Community Affiliates, Grosse Ile Soccer Club, Lincoln Park Soccer Club, Taylor Soccer Club and Woodhaven Brownstown Soccer Club. Our club is not just a place to play soccer though; it's a community where players find connection and belonging. It is our belief that everyone deserves a club they will never outgrow.
Every day, we are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their financial circumstances, has the opportunity to play the sport they love. That's why we established the Bernie Turner Foundation in 2022, providing financial assistance to families in need. Our goal is to make soccer accessible to all and to create a nurturing environment where athletes of all levels can grow athletically, mentally and as leaders. With the support and dedication of our community partners, anything is possible.
