The 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month we hold adoption events and are always looking for people to help out. Sometimes the volunteers will plan bake sales and other events as well. If you are wanting to help even more, pens and tarps have to also be sterilized before every event. In general, it is a nice way to spend a few hours with cute animals and talking to new people. Set up and break down of events is also needed.Available Shifts

Each week, the A Forever Home Rescue Foundation (AFH) holds an adoption event at the PetCo in Chantilly, VA. We're always in need of volunteers to help us handle the dogs that we bring onsite. While many of the dogs' foster parents will be with them, there are often times when a foster parent can't attend, or when a foster has more dogs / puppies than they can effectively manage in the hustle and bustle of an adoption event.Volunteer dog handlers are needed to assist. If you would like to participate as an AFH volunteer dog handler, please do the following:
- Check our website at http://www.aforeverhome.org/events/ to be sure we have an adoption event scheduled
- Review our adoption forms at http://www.aforeverhome.org/forms/animal-adoption-forms/ so you'll have a better understanding of how our adoption process works
- By no later than the Friday prior to the Sunday adoption event, send an email to volunteer@aforeverhome.org to let us know you'll be available to help out
- Please plan on participating for the entire event. If you are unable to do so, please make sure the adoption event coordinator knows this at the beginning of the event.
- Upon arrival at the event, proceed to "the table" to check in and get your assignment for the day. If you need a Community Service Hours validation signed, let the volunteer coordinator know at this time
- Talk with the foster parent or other knowledgeable volunteer about the dog(s) you will be handling. Get the basic information (name, gender, age, breed, etc.) so you'll be able to field the basic questions from prospective adopters
- NEVER allow a prospective adopter to walk away from you with a dog / puppy! We have had cases of animals being stolen from the adoption events.
- If someone asks you a question you cannot answer, direct them to either the foster parent or to the knowledgeable volunteer you spoke with on arrival. Again, DO NOT leave the dog with the prospective adopter and go find someone ... send the prospective adopter!
- At the end of the event, please let the event coordinator know that you are leaving, and, if applicable, get your Community Service Hours sheet signed
- If you have time, please help with cleanup :)

Volunteers are the heart of One Degree. These mentors, ambassadors and teachers give up their free time to work with students that are quite often brushed aside in their communities or schools. In return for giving these young people direction and support, our volunteers experience first-hand what it means to make a tangible difference in the lives of students that may have been left behind otherwise. What it takes:
Traditionally, our mentors are young professionals, but anyone who meets the following criteria is welcome to apply:
*Able to volunteer a minimum of one hour per month
*Patient, empathetic and considerate
*Comfortable with an online 1-on-1 mentoring environment
Important Note! While our mentoring often focuses on Maths and English academic support, you do NOT need exceptional skills in Maths or English, or previous mentoring or teaching experience to be a One Degree mentor.
What’s in it for you:
Our dynamic programme makes volunteering at One Degree a fun and stimulating way to spend your free time. You will be able to interact with people who share your passion. Participating in this environment will broaden your personal horizons as you make a meaningful impact and help to develop tomorrow’s leaders. You will also gain new communication skills that can be used in your business and personal relationships.
