JA BizTown is a simulated city where fourth through sixth graders experience hands-on workplace, business, and personal finance challenges. After a few weeks of in-classroom curriculum, students are selected for a job and spend a day at the JA facility taking on the role of a real-world professional. The fun, immersive atmosphere inspires teamwork, critical thinking, and decision-making skills for each student.

After participating in a comprehensive, in-school curriculum, students come to JA BizTown to get a taste of the real world of work through applied, hands-on learning. As a volunteer, you guide students through the day, offering your firsthand knowledge and expertise to enhance their experiences. Each day, a team of 15-20 volunteers helps students have a meaningful JA BizTown experience. JA staff are also on-site to lead the simulation. Online training is required prior to your JA BizTown visit. In addition, volunteers arrive early on simulation day for hands-on instruction.

We are looking for Mentors from all backgrounds and ages!

However, BIPOC volunteers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Why mentor?

There are many young people in the Gresham area in need of mentors
You can help inspire the next leaders, and to gain your own leadership skills
The connection and friendship gained is priceless
Mentoring is mutually beneficial
A little snippet about mentoring with us: Family of Friends Mentoring is a program in East county matching youth ages 6-12 with mentors in the area. The mentors are asked to invest an hour a week of their time for a year. This time can be spent doing a various activities. We like to match our mentors with youth that share similar interests. So if you like hiking, for example we would ideally match you with youth that also likes hiking. What we have found though, is its about the relationship, not the activity. Most mentors and mentees say the mundane days of folding laundry or cooking dinner together are the most memorable. We do provide stipends for activities that may cost money, and we have fully funded (really fun) match activities you can participate in monthly. We are with you every step of the way! We start with a phone call, application, orientation and then training that comes with a handbook. We will do frequent check-ins and support throughout your relationship with your matched youth. More information at our next orientation!

""immersion in the forest environment and conscious activation of the senses [58,59,60] (for an overview of example exercises carried out during forest bathing, see McEwan et al. [61]). Originally conceptualized as a form of preventative healthcare, forest bathing is now used as a targeted intervention for specific mental health issues and forms part of the national health service in Japan [59]. Over the past two decades, considerable emerging evidence around the efficacy of forest bathing as a therapeutic practice has been developed, principally stemming from Japan and South Korea [62,63].

A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Kotera et al. [11] outlines the evidence in support of forest bathing as an effective mental health therapy, with regards to its capacity to alleviate short-term mood disturbance. Forest bathing could be a suitable therapy, given it is a relatively safe and gentle practice, carried out in a supportive environment. It has been recommended as effective in the treatment of anxiety [11], depression [64], and addiction [58], and has been studied as an intervention for inpatients experiencing affective and psychotic disorders [65]. Miyazaki [59] additionally found support for forest bathing’s capacity to increase positive psychological resources, while improving the cardiovascular, immune, and respiratory systems.

Biophilia [66], the predominant theoretical framework used in the East, and Attention Restoration Theory [67,68] have been suggested as contributing to forest bathing’s therapeutic effects. "" #wellbeing

"" Forty-two articles that tested natural environments or stimuli against a suitable control, and included an objective measure of cognitive performance, had been published since July 2013. Articles were subjected to screening procedures and quality appraisal. Random effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate pooled effect sizes across 8 cognitive domains using data from 49 individual outcome measures. Results showed that working memory, cognitive flexibility, and to a less-reliable degree, attentional control, are improved after exposure to natural environments, with low to moderate effect sizes."" #attentionrestorationtheory#forestbathing

HELP US CHANGE THE WORLD!

We are looking for motivated individuals who would are ready to help make a difference in the world. CrowdDoing is searching for individuals who can help us find various sources of funding through grant research. The primary responsibility of a grant researcher will be for the research of applicable potential grant opportunities available. The person should fulfill the below criteria for this volunteer position:

Experienced researching funding options
Research, retrieval, and assembly of background material for grant proposals
Comfortable working remotely and independently
CrowdDoing.world'sCrowdDoing studied biophilia in cities and found that there are more than one hundred diseases that can be prevented through access to nature.[1] Nature Counter is a CrowdDoing concept, soon to become a functional prototype that lets each person see if they are getting that level of time in nature per week or per month.
Time in nature is approximated through the kind of nature that exists in cities-- geo-locations of people based on their cell phones when they are in parks. Nature Counter tracks each person’s time spent in parks when the application is on. This allows people to track it the way step counters track the number of steps they take. The aim is to have a universal public health goal of getting the city’s people to have enough time in parks to realize the biophilia collective health dividend. The concept is that spending time in nature is both an individual activity and a collective goal that friends should encourage each-other to achieve. Nature Counter is aimed at getting each person to track their time in nature and adjust their calendar over time to increase that time. Our estimations are that people’s time in nature would rise if they could track this and have target goals for their health due to time in nature accordingly.

120 Minutes per week in nature is also geo-locateable on phones. Have you gotten your 120 minutes a week at medium dose nature, or 90 minutes a day of high dose nature?

""In one study, University of Michigan students were given a brief memory test, then divided into two groups. One group took a walk around an arboretum, and the other took a walk down a city street. When the participants returned and did the test again, those who had walked among trees did almost 20% percent better than they had first time. The people who had taken in city sights instead did not consistently improve."" #biophelia

""Yoshifumi Miyazaki noted that, of the 7 million years human beings and their direct ancestors have been alive, we have lived in nature for 99.99% of that time. Therefore, it’s a very small percentage of time we have lived in the urban environments that we have created!

We are really adapted to living in nature. So living in these artificial environments actually creates stress on our bodies. We are made to be in nature and our bodies and brains respond well to it."" #naturalworld#scienceandenvironment#biodiversity#conservation

""n the last few decades, we have discovered that as adults we have what is called *neuroplasticity*. This means we are not doomed to live with the consequences of the things that have happened to us, but actually have the deep ability to create new connections and ""rewire"" parts of our brains.

Here’s where it gets really interesting and FUN. ☀️

It takes over 400 repetitions to create a new synapse (connection) in the brain.
