My name is Heidi Rhea (pronounced Ray), and I was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma, also called Bile Duct Cancer, June 2011. Hearing cancer is very scary, especially with my strong history of four generations of cancer on my paternal side. But this cancer, which is very rare and aggressive and is so often fatal, was absolutely devastating to hear. With statistics like 50% dying in the first year of being diagnosed, often within months, weeks, and even days. It is often misdiagnosed for 1-2 years and by then it is too late. And then only about 5-10% survive over 5 years. By 2040, a national study says that liver/ intrahepatic bile duct cancer, which I had, will be the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths! Because this cancer is rare it doesn't get the attention, funds, or research needed like other cancers get. I started my nonprofit, A Rhea of Hope LA in 2019, whose mission is to raise awareness and funds for Cholangiocarcinoma. I am blessed to still be a survivor and have lost many, many friends from this cancer. Friends met at the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation Conference, on the Cholangiocarcinoma Warrior Facebook page, or at a Cholangio fundraisers. This cancer is supposedly for those 65+, but so many young 20, 30, 40-year old's with young children and their whole lives ahead of them have lost their lives. I feel that God had a plan for me here and that is why I am still alive and so passionate about getting the word out about this devastating cancer and to raise money to fight it. Please contact me if you know anyone with this cancer, so I can be of help. It doesn't matter where they live.My mother was an Austrian war bride, and my dad an American soldier. I was raised with the German culture which included eating lots of delicious German food, dancing to polkas, listening to German beer drinking albums, and visiting Volksfests (like a mini-Oktoberfest) in Germany and Austria with my German relatives and just loving all of it. So, having my fundraiser a fun, traditional German, family-friendly Oktoberfest was a no-brainer for me. Our first one in 2019, was a huge success and we had over 1,000 people attending. Funds are raised for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation for research. We can also offer some financial help for local patients diagnosed with this cancer, because insurance doesn't pay for everything and many must travel out-of-state for treatment, lose everything in their refrigerator from our storms, or loss of income due to the cancer etc.
I haven’t been able to have a fundraiser since Fall 2019, so I came up with another signature Oktoberfest event and called it “Halfway to Oktoberfest Pub Crawl” It is actually more like a progressive restaurant evening with a variety of German foods, drinks, games, activities, contests, and raffles, for a good cause.
