Get Lit - Words Ignite is seeking dedicated individuals to join its Board of Directors, which plays a crucial role in upholding the organization’s commitment to excellence. The primary goal of this activity is to enhance literacy and empower young voices through the art of Spoken Word. Board members will help foster relationships with potential donors and leverage their networks to identify new fundraising opportunities, vital for sustaining and expanding Get Lit’s impactful programs for youth and young adults.Importance of the Role:By serving on the board, members contribute to a mission that celebrates diversity, creativity, and expression among young people. Their involvement is essential in securing the necessary resources to enable Get Lit to continue its work in transforming the lives of youth and young adults through literacy and the arts.

Programs at a Glance:
Career Readiness and Workforce Development: Programs designed to equip young people with the skills necessary for future success in various careers.
In-School Programs: Initiatives aimed at increasing literacy rates among students, fostering a love for reading and writing.
Film and Sound Summer Camps: Introduction to the entertainment industry for youth, providing hands-on experiences in various aspects of film and sound production.
Uni(Verse): An online platform that leverages technology, allowing students to collaborate with fellow poets from all over the world, enhancing their creative expression and networking opportunities.
Training of Educators: Professional development programs for teachers to effectively deliver our award-winning curriculum, ensuring that students receive the best possible education in literacy and the arts.

Key Details:
Board Composition: 20 member seats with a renewable term of three years.
Meetings: Quarterly via Zoom.
Events: Attendance at one programmatic event, such as the Annual Classic Slam (a culmination of our in-school programs), is mandatory. Board members are also required to invite their curated list of high-net-worth individuals and community leaders for our bi-monthly dinner series. Hosting at their home or co-hosting these events is encouraged.
Give/Get Commitment: Each board member has a give/get amount of $10,000, which can be fulfilled through personal donations or fundraising efforts.
Committee Participation: Each member must serve on at least one committee, including Executive, Finance, Resource Development, Strategic Planning, Governance, or Board Recruitment.
Ideal Candidate Profile:The ideal board member is a passionate advocate for youth and young adult literacy and the arts, particularly Spoken Word. They should celebrate diversity and bring a unique perspective to the board. A strong understanding of fundraising, along with established connections in relevant industries, is essential for effectively supporting Get Lit’s mission.

Description: Dive into a powerful book that sheds light on a significant global issue and sparks meaningful conversations. You and your team are invited to read “Take Me With You,” by Global Impact CEO Scott Jackson, which aligns with our mission to create positive social impact. After reading, participants can join a one-time virtual discussion session to share insights, reflections, and takeaways. This is a chance to learn, engage with colleagues, and explore how the book’s themes can inspire action within our communities and beyond.

Participants: This project can be done in a self-facilitated group. If you would like your project to be facilitated by a Global Impact team lead, we can offer 5 facilitated sessions. (No minimums apply)

Location: Your team is welcome to gather in-person for self-facilitated groups or work virtually for either self-facilitated groups or Global Impact-led events on Teams.

Additional Details: No funding required. The book is available for purchase online or at your local library. Global Impact does not supply book copies.

EWB-USA's Engineering for Global Development (STEM) Outreach Program is specifically designed for you to inspire community college students, promote diversity in STEM, and share real-world global challenges.

Come learn more about becoming a STEM workshop facilitator! Gain the tools and support you need to lead a Clean Water or Renewable Energy Workshop. This training is a great way to build confidence, sharpen your skills, and get the support you need to lead impactful, hands-on STEM workshops.

You’re welcome to attend a training session even if you have not yet signed up to facilitate a workshop. Training is required before the workshop date.

The YWCA of the City of New York (YWCA NYC) is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. We are a multiracial social justice organization dedicated to addressing issues that emerge at the intersection of race, class, and gender. Founded in 1858, the YWCA NYC was the first YW in the United States and is part of an international movement of YWs worldwide. We currently serve nearly 3,000 school children and youth annually by providing educational, leadership and advocacy training for young women through our high school Girls Initiatives and afterschool programs for elementary and middle school students in culturally diverse communities in New York City.

Our organization is led by Alba Rodriguez, a dedicated advocate for community growth and development with over 20 years of experience in nonprofit management for human services, youth development and educational organizations. Alba was formerly the Chief Strategy and Data Officer of Brooklyn Community Services (BCS), which serves 20,000 residents annually. At BCS, she oversaw data, external relations, fundraising and IT, and led the development and execution of organizational strategy. Prior to joining BCS, Alba served as VP of the Posse Institute at The Posse Foundation, one of the largest youth leadership development and college success organizations in the country. Alba has also managed consulting projects for Firefly Education, LLC, including leading major youth-assessment initiatives serving low-income students for the College Success Foundation; and has provided strategic consulting for selective colleges and other organizations on their diversity programs. Alba holds a B.S. in philosophy and biopsychology from Tufts University and an Ed.M. in human development and psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Our board is comprised of professionals from diverse industries and backgrounds who provide expertise and aid in fundraising efforts that advance the YWCA NYC’s mission. Members also have the opportunity to network and engage with other purpose-driven individuals.

We pride individuality and understand that every board member brings his/her/their own unique qualities and skills. Ours is a large tent, and we offer many opportunities to support our work.

As recent recipients of a major gift from Mackenzie Scott we have conducted this past year a long-range strategic planning process to guide our growth and support of the communities we serve.

Time Commitment
The minimum time commitment is about 2-4 hours per month through a combination of meetings and organizational functions held in virtual and/or live settings. Board meetings are held quarterly, and each board member is asked to serve on one or more committees. These committees include Investment and Finance, Nominating and Governance, Development and Communcations, and Human Resources. Ad-Hoc committees may on occasion be formed.

Financial Commitment
All members commit to providing at least $10,000 in support each year either personally or through outreach. Members are asked to support special events and activities by purchasing tickets and encouraging friends and colleagues to attend. All funds raised will be used to support the YWCA NYC’s programs and operations.

Requirements
Since board members have a fiduciary obligation, they will be asked to submit to a general background check. All members will understand the YWCA NYC’s mission and serve as active ambassadors of the organization. Opportunities Members may run for leadership positions, including Chair, Vice -Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Other volunteer services include:
-Serving as a panelist or workshop organizer or presenter at our annual Girls Symposium.
-Working on the organizing the first ever Hackathon to create a gaming app to create an on-going revenue stream for Girls Initiatives programs.
-Creating webinars and in-person sessions for adults to learn about poverty, health, education, and other social and racial justice issues.
