Every summer we reach more than 700 children with our Summer Reading Program which helps them maintain their reading skills and avoid declining competence known as the “summer slide”. Literacy is more important now then ever and our goal is to help our community in the best way we can.
The Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library hosts an annual community fair called "MayFest in Odessa" on the first Saturday of every May. This event features outdoor crafters, vendors, food, games and prizes for kids. We also have live music, a petting zoo, wandering costumed characters, a gigantic book sale, and an exciting huge raffle. All proceeds benefit our annual Summer Reading Program. About 1000 people come throughout the day to enjoy our events.
An aspect which makes our fundraiser such a success is all the community volunteers who come and help that day. Local high school students, adults and community members all join us in our quest to raise funds for our Summer Reading Program.
Volunteer responsibilities include but are not limited to helping set up tents, tables, unload vendor cars, supervise game stations, sell tickets, sell books, sell food, break down tents and tables, cars, and break down kids games.

Host a shoe drive! By hosting a shoe drive you can create community engagement, provide new opportunities for those in need AND give back to the environment. Every 20 pairs of shoes counts as 1 hour of service plus any hours spent marketing the drive and collecting/pairing shoes count as service hours as well.

Soles4Souls creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. It’s estimated that 21 billion pounds of textile waste is dumped in landfills every year. That makes up more than 5% of all municipal waste generated every year. Since 2006, Soles4Souls has diverted 23.8 million pounds of shoes and clothes from landfills and instead created meaningful economic opportunities and helped provide new shoes for those in need around the globe. Gently-worn shoes collected help individuals start and sustain small businesses to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Hosting a shoe drive can be done in 5 simple steps:

1. Choose a theme for your drive (i.e. Go Green, Thanks4Giving, Women4Women or generic “Create Your Own). Marketing materials look different depending on what you choose.
2. Register to host a shoe drive for a specific period of time and with a goal in mind: https://soles4souls.org/shoe-drive/
3. Soles4Souls provides branded collection boxes for you to set out. You line these with a garbage bag and replace as it is filled.
4. You would blast an email out to your employees, clients, customers, etc as you prefer letting them know about the drive. Flyers and links to resources will be provided for this!
5. Once the drive concludes, volunteers will count the shoes, pair them together, and bring to the Regional Donation Center or ship them to the nearest warehouse. A Soles4Souls representative will help coordinate this once a drive is registered.

We are looking for individuals to create and/or drive a shoe pick up route! This opportunity includes offering to pick up shoes from businesses, who continuously collect shoes for Soles4Souls, and delivering them to the Virginia warehouse in Richmond. Some businesses need pick-ups every week while others fill up once a month. You can keep the shoes in your garage until you get a car load and then bring them to the warehouse or bring them as you pick-up.

Soles4Souls is a non-profit social enterprise based in Nashville, TN and a registered 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS. Our mission is to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Since Soles4Souls began in 2006, we’ve distributed over 30 million pairs of shoes in 127 countries and all 50 US states.

Did you know that EVERY SINGLE ONE of those pairs makes a difference in people’s lives? The used shoes you deliver will go to helping our entrepreneurs in places like Haiti, Nicaragua, Honduras, Moldova, Sierra Leone, and Malawi create sustainable income for themselves! In fact, the sale of just 1 pair of shoes can provide 5 meals for family in Haiti.

What an impact!
