Refugee families come to the United States seeking a safe haven from violence and persecution in their home countries. They leave behind family and friends, as well as virtually everything they own. Many Americans, seeing these families in their communities, wonder: What can I do to help? Miry’s List is a nonprofit organization that provides a mechanism for people to directly help new arrival refugee families with the incredible challenge of resettlement in the US – we help these families connect with caring people, basic necessities, and services that make this process less isolating and less intimidating.

For this volunteer opportunity, we're asking helpers to join Miry and team Miry’s List to write letters to families resettling as refugees in the United States from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Ukraine, and Moldova. The virtual Microsoft Teams session will open with a 15-minute training and empathy-building exercise to give participants some context for how the resettlement system in the United States works for refugee families, how it feels to start over in a new country, and how we can help. Using the Miry's List guide to writing welcome letters, we will activate as a group to write handwritten letters together. Art is welcome too!

Completed letters will be sent to Miry’s List and will be distributed to resettling families across the United States inside welcome kits with essential supplies, including toiletries clothes and school supplies.
