Armed Forces are the only organization in which the soldiers and officers take an oath to follow order, even to the peril of their lives. Hence, it becomes imperative that every martyr is not only honored by a grateful nation, but also a sincere and dedicated effort is made to ensure that his loved ones are also adequately looked after.
For India to remain a land of heroes, whose valor is honored worldwide we need to instill that “hope” in every member of the Armed Forces, that there is someone “behind” whom they can bank on, in their absence. Having the third largest standing Defence Forces in the World, with more than 74 thousand sqkm of disputed borders, this responsibility of instilling hope assumed greater significance.

The aspect has somehow been give lowest priority by various institutions and organizations setup by the Armed Forces to support the welfare of dependents of war heroes; especially war widows and their children. Not only is this a neglected area but is rather an area where we have failed to make any significant improvements for decades on end. It’s a gap that needs to be addressed with a sense of highest urgency.
