Opportunity Details

The Youth Mentorship Program is for vulnerable youth who will benefit from more intensified supports to better directly assist them in regards to their legal and personal issues.
The Mentors provide direct support to youth to assist them in staying on track with the expectations of their conditions, and trying to prevent detention or further charges from being added. In addition to attending court hearings, docket court, or court mandated appointments, staff and Mentors assist families with strategies on how to support their youth, including connecting them to community resources that address issues related to addiction, trauma, and mental health.
Through relationship building and pro-social activities, Mentors become natural supports to the youth, enhancing their trust in working with the system and supporting the successful completion of their court orders.
WHAT OUR MENTORS DO:
All expectations are met with the full support of the Youth Legal Advocate Staff Member
• Mentors work with 1-3 youth at a time, depending on the needs of each youth and have agreed to a minimum of a 1 year commitment.
• Mentors discuss the conditions of an order with the youth in layman’s terms to ensure that they understand what is expected of them.
• Mentors attend scheduled court dates and court ordered appointments with the youth.
• Mentors connect with the youth to ensure that they understand appointment addresses, directions and have appropriate transportation arranged.
• Mentors engage with the youth and their family through regular communication, check-ins and meetings (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly depending on the youth).
• Mentors organize pro-social activities with the youth.
• Mentors support youth to meet the agreed upon mentorship goals throughout the mentorship.
• Mentors report back to the Youth Legal Advocate after each meeting with their youth and outline the successes or struggles taking place within the relationship to ensure the youth is receiving the best support possible.
OUR MENTORS:
The program has both male and female Mentors ranging from 20 to 30 years of age. All have undergone both a Child and Family Services Intervention Record Check and a Vulnerable Sectors Criminal Record Check. The Mentors come from a variety of backgrounds, with varying life experiences, ethnicities, educations and interests. All of our Mentors have direct volunteer or work experience with children or youth in differing capacities. They all bring their unique skill sets to the mentorship program and provide the program with varied supports to fit the diverse needs of youth in the justice system.
“Initially, I was uncertain of what the experience was going to be like, but excited for the possibility of building a relationship with a youth in need. After court dates, Stampeders football games, picnics in the park, swimming days, and counselling dates, I grew incredibly close to my mentee and developed a relationship like one I’ve never had before. I am invested in getting my youth through their probation, out of the justice system and off to a better start.
