WHAT IS A TSIC MENTOR?
A mentor is a caring, compassionate adult who chooses to devote their time to a young person, offering them support, guidance, and encouragement. If you can donate 30 minutes per week, you can change a life by helping a child build a solid foundation of values, establish goals, improve their academic and life skills, while developing their self-esteem and confidence. Read about our local mentor Ron Rodgers' experience at www.takestockinchildren.org/resources/mentors/mentor-success-stories/ron-rodgers

WHY BECOME A MENTOR?
Our success rate at Take Stock in Children is a result of a comprehensive approach provided by our program. One of the key and proven success factors is the role of the mentor. More and more people want to have a lasting, profound impact in their community. They understand that the commitment of becoming a mentor can change a child’s life while helping them grow personally. Can you remember adults who paid attention to you; who believed in you; and who guided you during your childhood? These individuals served as mentors. Wouldn’t you like to have someone think of you as their life-changing, trusted mentor?

WHERE & WHEN DOES MENTORING OCCUR?
Mentoring sessions range from 30-60 minutes and occur virtually or on a school campus near your home or workplace, during the student's lunch. With the current pandemic, virtual mentoring has been taking place. The days and times of mentoring sessions are arranged between the mentor and mentee depending on their individual schedules and classes. As a result, mentoring is convenient for both students and mentors.

HOW DO I BECOME A MENTOR?
Take Stock in Children mentors learn the principles and guidelines of school-based, academic-focused mentoring. They participate in an orientation session and receive a manual that contains tools for addressing the general needs of their students: improving grades, preparing for college, career planning, and developing life skills.

If you would like to mentor a student, please complete the application or request an application from our office. The steps to become a Take Stock in Children mentor are listed below:
Visit https://www.futuresvolusia.org/Become-A-Take-Stock-in-Children--TSIC--Mentor-6-19.html for links to the mentor application.
Once your Take Stock in Children mentor application is received, a mentor training session will be scheduled.
A background check will be completed with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
After the mentor training and background check have been completed, you will be paired with a Take Stock in Children scholar.

ENGLISH:

We advocate for quality education that is free and available to all. The most important part of this is our one-to-one classes and personalised materials that allow students to learn at their own pace according to their needs. After a short training period in which educators are introduced to the curriculum and shown our (top-secret) techniques the teaching can begin!

Educators stay with us for at least 6 weeks and are paired with the same students throughout this period to ensure continuity and build familiarity between teacher and pupils. They also become a big part of their students’ lives and get to know their parents and families who love and cherish our volunteers who come from around the world to offer them such invaluable help. For volunteers in Beirut this means that you will experience the incredible hospitality and kindness of our families in the form dinner invites. We guarantee our volunteers two things – they will love their students, and they won’t taste better food.

Our goal is to erase the barrier between educator and student and open a door to friendship and companionship. Thus, our educators are not mere teachers, they are a shoulder to lean on, a listening ear, a friendly smile, an older sibling.

--------

ENGLISH:

At 26 Letters, we believe that it is the educational programme that should adapt to students and not the other way around. We also believe in the importance of mainstreaming ethical concepts in all our subjects, including Maths! This is why we develop our own educational materials so that they can later be personalized and adapted to each student’s needs and interests.

This is only possible thanks to our incredible curriculum development team. Our volunteers work from home with the aim of designing comprehensive, ethical and fun materials. They work independently, creating their own schedules and developing their books with total creative liberty.

At 26 Letters we all learn by doing! So, if you want to join the team you do not need to worry about previous experience. Tamar Taibo, co-founder and director of the department, will guide you and help you design your materials with all the care and patience of the world!

Here at Sepsis Research FEAT, we have been growing fast. As we do so we’ve been talking about volunteer groups and how we get them up and running across the UK to support the vital fundraising, research & awareness work that we do.

We know that things have moved on recently though – our supporters have more pressures on their time than ever before, a lot of you are now working from home, you often find it hard to make a regular volunteering commitment and you are also the kind of lovely people who like to spread the love and support a number of different causes.

So that’s why we have launched the Sepsis Research FEAT Action Team!

It’s a really flexible and easy way to volunteer for our charity – designed to fit around you and the way you live. You can dip in and out whenever you have the time.

The team runs via a private group on Facebook and we use it to feed out opportunities regularly to the group so that our Action Team members can decide what really sparks their interest, what they feel they can manage and what they’d like to jump on and give us a hand with.

We post opportunities regularly detailing all sorts of different types of help that we need, but it isn’t a one-way street – we encourage members to give us feedback on what we’re doing, and we love to see chat between team members UK-wide, sharing thoughts and ideas.

The key word is ‘Action’!

And that action has real value – an hour of your time is worth anywhere between £10 and £20 to us as an organisation, sometimes even more. If, for example, you could offer us the benefit of your skills and service for something like a photography assignment, the value is what we would have had to pay a professional to come and do the same job. The donation of your time and expertise really does count.

If you’d like to join our Sepsis Research FEAT Action Team: (await response from Eve 28.4.22)

Email us now at info@sepsisresearch.org.uk with the subject header ‘Yes please: I’d like to join the Sepsis Research FEAT Action Team’

If you don’t already have a Sepsis Research FEAT T-shirt let us know ASAP and we’ll pop one in the post

Think about who else you could maybe invite to join the group.

Start interacting on the group, tell us what you're planning events-wise and grab those opportunities as we post them!

The Sepsis Research FEAT Action Team is a chance to create a proper community of supporters for Sepsis Research FEAT and the vital work that we do. Crucially, it’s a way for you to help Sepsis Research FEAT to grow UK-wide, raising awareness of sepsis and taking the vital work that we do to a whole new level. We'd love to have you on board, so do join our Action Team today!

In a recent Scottish survey nearly 90% of people had heard of sepsis.

Only 10% could name the key symptoms.

Awareness raising is a huge part of our work.

Without it of sepsis will continue to be the 'silent killer' that takes around 50,000 lives in the UK every year - roughly one every 12 minutes.

Without it, more patients will be diagnosed too late and suffer long-term physical and emotional side-effects.

Our aim is to make sure that everyone in the UK is aware of the five key symptoms of sepsis:
- cold or blotchy hands and feet
- very high or low temperature
- uncontrolled shivering
- reduced urine output
- confusion
and that they can act quickly to ensure speedy treatment and diagnosis.

Do you have what it takes to conduct presentations and take part in Q&A sessions - virtually under the current COVID restrictions and in person longer-term - with the aim of raising awareness of sepsis and enhancing the profile of the charity?

All volunteers will be offered full training by the central charity team.

If the idea of making a genuine difference and helping to save lives appeals to you email us today: info@sepsisresearch.org.uk or check out our website at www.sepsisresearch.org.uk.

Thank you!

VIRTUAL MENTORS NEEDED

The Changemaker Project is a global challenge for youth ages 13-18. Students all over the world join an online course in which they learn about social and environmental justice issues, work together in teams to design solutions to problems they care about, and pitch their projects for funding at our annual Global Pitch event. We need volunteers to act as virtual mentors for our teams!

The goal of the mentoring program is to connect our teams with folks of different backgrounds and skill sets who can offer guidance on their projects. Our mentors include program alumni, college students, working professionals, and retirees.

We provide training for mentors to ensure you are successful in supporting your students. The commitment as a mentor this year is to attend four Zoom calls, on the first Saturday of the month from Feb.-May, 10-11am PST. During these Zoom calls, you'll join a breakout room with your team or "mentee" and coach them on their project. You will learn about their initiative and provide feedback, support, insights, and ideas as they develop it. We hope you will join us in supporting our students as they launch their projects!

GET INVOLVED:

1. Sign up here: https://www.thechangemakerproject.org/mentors
2. Complete an online training (1 hour)
3. Meet with your team! (3 one-hour Zoom calls)
