Opportunity Details

Each year the Mobile Science Lab travels to 20 schools all over San Diego county. During the three-day curriculum students conduct experiments designed to illustrate that traits are passed from generation to generation through a set of instructions called DNA. Students not only learn about the structure and function of DNA, but also the techniques that are used for DNA fingerprinting and screens for disease. All the necessary equipment and a team of fantastic volunteers are brought to the classroom where a group of 90-150 students practice hands-on, interactive science for three days.

Volunteers: On Days 2 and 3 of the program, our team of volunteers each lead a small group of 5-8 middle school students through a hands-on activity. We send a confirmation email to all of the volunteers about a week before the program that will contain all of the logistical information for the visit along with links to videos that walk through the activity. We ask the volunteers to come approximately 15 minutes before the start of the first period to run through the activity and answer any questions volunteers may have. The teacher and Education Outreach team are on hand to support for the entirety of the program.
