Position Overview
Join the Technology Access Foundation (TAF) as a Volunteer Instructor for the Drone Legends FPV Initiator program! This exciting opportunity allows you to inspire and educate students in drone technology, focusing on both ground school and practical flying skills. You will be part of a dedicated team that guides students through the fundamentals of drone operation, while fostering a passion for STEM education in a hands-on learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ground School Instructor (1 Position Available): (first hour of instruction)
- Teach students the theoretical aspects of drone operation, including:
- FAA regulations and safety protocols
- Basic aerodynamics and drone components
- Flight planning and navigation
- Develop lesson plans and materials to facilitate learning.
- Assess students’ understanding and provide feedback on their progress.
- Flying Instructor (4 Position Available): (last 2 hours of instruction)
Provide hands-on instruction in flying drones, including:
- Basic flying maneuvers and controls
- Safety practices while operating drones
- Conduct flight simulations and indoor practice sessions.
- Supervise student flights, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
- Offer personalized guidance to students as they develop their flying skills.
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Private or Commercial Pilot's License or FAA Part 107 Certification.
- Previous experience in teaching or mentoring youth is preferred but not required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with students of diverse backgrounds.
- Passion for STEM education and a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other instructors and staff.
Additional Information
- The program runs for approximately 3 months, with two cycles per year.
- Each instructor will work with a group of no more than 4 students (20 students total).
- Training and resources will be provided to ensure successful implementation of the curriculum.

Preparing for the future of jobs means that students must acquire and apply and commit to continuously learning skills needed in demanding and ever-changing workplaces.By the time they visit OMP, students will have completed their Career Success Workshop, which includes developing job-seeking tools, such as networking, building resumes and self-branding, with the learning intentions of the workshop to be reinforced by this Career Day. While onsite students will also enjoy the opportunity to work with the Dream Space team.
In visiting OMP for Career Day, students will observe professional work conduct and learn more about the skills and attributes needed to work in certain roles and gain insights into a 'Day in the Life’ of a Microsoft team member to further develop their understanding of employability. Microsoft volunteers are needed to help host Career Day and to share their career journey to date with the visiting students as well as talking about their current roles. By engaging with students during Career Day at OMP, volunteers will demonstrate the wide variety of careers available in the tech industry.
