We are looking for a technical person to help us develop an app for youth. The volunteer will first act as an advisor and later support the production of the app.

We had discovered that students ages 14 to 18+ max 25( high school and university) or more are less likely to participate in teacher-led social innovation projects using design thinking. However they are interested in contributing to solving community issues using an independent, technology guided approach and working with peers.

We want to create an app for youth who will use design thinking to build a social innovation to address problems in their own communities. The app will provide practical steps they can take in order to address these problems and build social innovation in teams or individually.

Career Ready managed by Junior Achievement (JA) enables Transition Year students to complete an 18-month employability skills programme comprising five distinct elements. • Deansrath Community College
• Griffeen Community College
• St. Kevin's Community College. Clondalkin
• Kishoge College

Each meeting has a specific focus, taking the student through various aspects of business training, while also allowing time for engagement on topics that the students wants to discuss perhaps related to a mentor’s experience in working in another country or a student’s deliberations on subjects of interest at senior cycle.

In total you will meet your mentee 10 times over 18 months (15-20 volunteering hours)

ABOUT BRAVEN & THE PROBLEM YOU’D HELP SOLVE
Only 25% of low-income or first-generation college students graduate and attain a strong job. At the same time, local companies struggle to hire and retain local, diverse talent. Braven seeks to close this talent gap by partnering with colleges and companies to equip underrepresented young people with the skills, networks, and experiences they need to succeed professionally.

BRAVEN’S RESULTS TO DATE
Before and amid the pandemic, Braven Fellows outpace the national average for strong job attainment; within six months of graduation, 58% of Fellows in the Class of 2020 secured quality full-time jobs worthy of their bachelor’s degree or enrolled in graduate school compared to 41% of all students and 39% of students from similar backgrounds. In addition, 95% of our Fellows are persisting in or have graduated from college, and 75% of Braven college graduates have at least one internship during college, compared with 68% of all college graduates.

93% of volunteers have said this was the most rewarding volunteer experience they’ve ever been a part of, and 99% say the program helped them develop and practice skills that apply directly to their job and leadership growth.

Be a classroom mentor!
Work weekly in a high school classroom (1.5 hour class/week) helping students that need extra support.

For some students, individual attention is the difference between success and failure. They may lack expected background skills or have difficulty understanding new concepts. They may have limited fluency in English and require additional explanations.

For the student, failure in required classes means repeating the class in future years along with all other classes. Failure also re-enforces negative personal feelings school disengagement, increasing the likelihood of dropping out.

Our mentors are invited to work in classrooms in multiple high schools, 9th - 12th grade, in subjects like History, English, Math and English Language Development. Mentors volunteer in-person. Classes are during school hours. Volunteers are expected to commit to at least one semester but considerations are made for volunteers that start late in the semester.
