Welcome to SpiritCorps, a volunteer-driven positive core values program serving seventh to eleventh grade students from Maine to California. SpiritCorps is your opportunity to join a community of volunteers, tending to the spirit of our children through the profound power of story. Learn more about this wonderful volunteer opportunity at one of the 30-minute Discovery Sessions listed below.

SpiritCorps begins with heartfelt video stories from program staff and friends, inspired by the lives of the historic heroes we celebrate in Spirit Series. This year, from the many virtues exemplified in the Series, schools can choose to explore Courage, Compassion, or Conscience. With guidance from their adult Story Coach volunteers, participating students complete a 5-Step self-discovery and writing process to identify, craft and record a true-life SpiritCorps video story of their own.

Story Coach volunteers mentor students with constructive written feedback at three critical points during the process. You don’t need to be the world’s greatest writer to Coach! Just a feel for good story and a commitment to advance the lives of the young people we serve. As an added benefit, and a crucial part of your training, Coaches will also go through the 5-Step process, from pitch to video story of your own! Once trained, we ask that you give 15-20 hours of your time, mentoring as many as 20 students during the school year. To learn more, watch this brief video (https://www.spiritseries.org/spiritcorps/) and make the SpiritCorps connection. Together We Grow!

You can volunteer from anywhere in the world: from Hoofddorp and Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Belgium, to Wetherby, UK, to Kornwestheim, Germany, to Maine, USA and anywhere in between. Join us in growing together!

Youth About Business teaches business to high school students through hosting a series of team-based Mergers and Acquisitions simulations. Over the course of a week, students will work in teams of 4-5 and assume the roles of the Executive Management of a public company to perform a M&A transaction.

The camp is an intense competition. Many students have very limited exposure to the business world, but gain a great understanding through engaging with a series of speakers, volunteers, and advisors during their camp week.

To win the competition, students must submit a written shareholder report that outlines the details of their transactions.

Reading of Shareholder Reports (Self-Paced)

Volunteers are tasked with reading and scoring shareholder reports submitted from student teams. Each student team is tasked with summarizing their proposed M&A transactions as a report to their shareholders. Volunteers are asked to read a set of reports and assign each report a score based on a grading rubric.

Students will qualify for next rounds and awards based on the quality and scoring of their reports.

Do you want to have an impact of education and improve outcomes for all children?

Governors for Schools is an education charity that engages and supports volunteers to become school governors. We have schools across England and Wales that are looking for skilled volunteers and we will provide the support to help you thrive in the role.

Who are Governors for Schools?
Governors for Schools operates to improve educational standards and ensure all children and young people have the chance to realise their full potential.

We believe the key to improving school performance is effective governance. By finding, nurturing and supporting a committed network of governors, we drive positive systematic change that benefits each and every student, regardless of their background.

What’s involved?
There are governor vacancies across England and Wales. Some schools are also looking for 'remote' governors who don't need to live near the school they support.

Governors volunteer at board level to set the strategic vision for their school. This involves constructively challenging current processes, using your unique skills to support senior leaders, and overseeing school finances. You’ll be involved in areas such as monitoring, budget management, and data analysis.

As well as putting your expertise to good use, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional skills. Ultimately, you’ll work towards facilitating the delivery of a broad and exciting curriculum and oversee wellbeing and inclusion initiatives.

Governance represents a fantastic opportunity to develop yourself while making a real impact on the education of children and young people.

Governors work collaboratively with the headteacher and other members of the board, including parents and school staff.

In most schools, full board meetings are held termly, as are committee meetings. Many governors will sit on a committee linked to their expertise or interests, such as teaching and learning or finance and resources.

Governors usually support schools for a period of four years and with an estimated time commitment of 7 hours per month, to include attending meetings, reading papers, attending training and occasional visits to school.

Who can be a governor?
The most important part of being a governor is the ability to ask questions, provide support and have the best interests of the school at heart. You don't have to be a parent or have experience in education to become a governor. A wide range of skills are sought to support the board including finance, HR and data analysis.

Boards also need governors with diverse backgrounds and lived experience, so that all perspectives can be considered.

Professional experience is welcomed as is community insight and experience of working collaboratively.

You need to be aged 18 or above, and there are certain criminal convictions that would exclude you from the role. A Disclosure and Barring Service check will be carried out by the school.

What’s the process?
You can find out more about the school governor role by attending one of our recruitment webinars.

You can complete your online profile on the website, including your motivation to take on the role, your skills and your school preferences. Your regional Partnership Manager will then look at vacancies that match your requirements. Once a school is identified, you will have the opportunity to discuss the role with them in more detail, visit the school, and observe a meeting. If appointed, a DBS check will take place and, in some cases, the school will seek references.

Ongoing support
Governors for Schools isn’t just a matching service. We want to help you thrive in your role through bespoke and ongoing support. We provide eLearning and monthly webinars covering a variety of topics to increase your knowledge of the education sector and governance. You’ll also have access to The Key for School Governors, an information hub designed to show new governors the ropes and offer a useful point of reference for existing governors.
