At JA Finance Park presented by the USAA Foundation, each student becomes “an adult for the day” in an electronic simulation. The students are assigned a life scenario so they can experience firsthand the real-life challenges of making personal budgeting decisions. After calculating their net monthly income and savings goals, students visit kiosks that represent different budget categories such housing, health insurance, groceries, and utilities. Anyone with real world monthly budgeting experience can become a volunteer. JA Finance Park Volunteers play a key role by helping the students understand the concepts of personal financial planning and career exploration. Volunteers provide guidance and assistance while monitoring and verifying students’ work.

I am pleased to invite you to judge the Preliminary Round of the 2022 Euro Challenge. The Challenge began in 2006 and is now in its 16th year. Launched by the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, it is the first educational program in the United States that helps young people, grades 9 and 10, learn about the Euro Area and the euro. Despite the challenges of Covid-19, we have more than 60 teams participating this year from Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, California, and the District of Colombia who compete for monetary awards, made possible by The Moody’s Foundation.

The preliminary Round this year will take place VIRTUALLY on April 4th. There will be a morning session (9:00 am – 12:30 pm) and an afternoon session (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm). We would be delighted if you could judge on one of the slots.

Volunteers who elect to judge the competition should have experience in economics, international finance, and or business in Europe

Your Role: As a judge, you will serve on a virtual panel and, using a scoring rubric, assess the performance of several of the competing teams. Teams will give a fifteen (15) minute presentation followed by ten (10) minutes of Q & A by judges on the panel. Teams will deliver virtual presentations via Zoom for the preliminary round to ensure the safety of our judges and students. During the Preliminary Round, you will judge virtual presentations. Teams will address the three-part Euro Challenge question:

· Describe the current economic situation in the Euro Area (the economic region consisting of the EU member countries who have adopted the euro) and include a discussion of GDP growth, unemployment, and inflation in the Euro Area.

· Select one economic-related challenge confronting the Euro Area as a whole and pick one of the member countries of the Euro Area to illustrate that challenge.

· Recommend a policy or policies for addressing the challenge identified in the country selected and explain the impact of having a single currency.

Judging Materials: You will receive a package with judging instructions, the scoring rubric, and sample questions for the Q&A one week before the event. On the day of the Preliminary Round, there will be an orientation for judges.
