Tutor with School on Wheels Massachusetts

Description of opportunity: School On Wheels Massachusetts is looking for tech-savvy tutors to help students of varying ages with a range of subject matters.

Logistics: This is an in person opportunity (limited remote opportunities). One hour per week, for a minimum of 6 weeks. Spanish speakers and tutors from diverse backgrounds are preferred but not required.

For in person volunteers, there is a strong preference for tutors in Dorchester. Other locations are Stoughton, Brockton, and Norwell.

Nonprofit: School on Wheels of Massachusetts' (SOWMA) mission is to support the academic, social and emotional growth of students impacted by homelessness. SOWMA's vision is for all students to have the support necessary to be successful in school and achieve a productive future that will help end the cycle of homelessness. In 2004, SOWMA launched their Tutoring Program and added High School Plus, now the Bridge Program, in 2009. Today, they offer 3 Pathways to Success: 1. Tutoring Program: 1 on 1 tutoring support for PreK-12 students; 2. Bridge Program: guidance, prep, access for Middle and High School and college students; and 3. Tools for School: backpacks and school supplies. Since 2004, SOWMA has tutored 3,200+ students, celebrated 32 college graduations and distributed 25,000+ customized backpacks. SOWMA had a 100% graduation rate for Bridge Program college and high school seniors for the 2021 class.

At JA Finance Park presented by the USAA Foundation, each student becomes “an adult for the day” in an electronic simulation. The students are assigned a life scenario so they can experience firsthand the real-life challenges of making personal budgeting decisions. After calculating their net monthly income and savings goals, students visit kiosks that represent different budget categories such housing, health insurance, groceries, and utilities. Anyone with real world monthly budgeting experience can become a volunteer. JA Finance Park Volunteers play a key role by helping the students understand the concepts of personal financial planning and career exploration. Volunteers provide guidance and assistance while monitoring and verifying students’ work.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a program for Grades 9-12.
The FIRST Robotics Competition gives high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to work and create together to solve a common problem. Under strict rules, limited resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.

At the FIRST Robotics Competition Events, teams show off what they learned and invented, and compete with their robots! They celebrate their hard work and meet other teams while competing for a spot at the FIRST Robotics Competition Ontario Provincial Championships! It’s a fun way to cap off their season!

As a judge, you will work in small groups to select team award recipients through interaction with teams, review documentation regarding team background information to familiarize judges with teams, and serve as role models for the students.

Time Commitment (see this link to sign up to be a judge where it also outlines time commitment).
https://www.firstroboticscanada.org/frc/volunteerjudges/

Skills and Experience:

- Maximum of 4 Judges from one company per event
- Judges cannot judge at an event where their child is competing
