Join us for this Virtual Trivia Event and Letter Writing Activity to learn fun trivia facts, increase your knowledge about Junior Achievement of Chicago, and support local youth throughout the region! We encourage volunteers to participate in this opportunity in groups, but you can also participate individually.

This event is totally virtual, and you can participate anywhere there is internet access. The event will start with a trivia game which will last one hour and include various question categories including General Trivia, Movies, Pop Culture, Chicago History, "Are you Smarter than a Junior Achievement Student", and more. It's a fun way to learn trivia facts as well as increase your understanding of Junior Achievement programs.

After the trivia game, there will be a letter-writing activity to encourage middle and high school students to achieve their highest potential while also helping them learn about different career pathways. This activity will be self-guided with instructions provided by Junior Achievement of Chicago staff. The letters will be distributed to youth in our programs across the region to show that there are people who care about their success and want them to achieve their highest potential.

LETTERS TO JA STUDENTS
After the virtual trivia event (or if you prefer, you can do it before), Kohl's employees are asked to write a personal letter to at least one JA student. These letters can be typed as emails, Word documents, Googledocs, etc. If you'd like, you can get creative and use Canva. We've listed below info on the age groups of the youth receiving the letters, what to include in the letters, and more.

What are the age groups of students receiving letters?
• The students will be in junior high school or high school (ages 11 - 18).

What should I include in my letter?
• Introduction about yourself and your company or organization.
• Your “job story” – what you do to earn a living (basic job description) and why you choose to do it.
• What does your typical day-to-day work look like? What do you love about your work?
• How has COVID-19 changed your day-to-day work? What advice do you have for students learning remotely?
• What did you want to be when you were in school? How does that connect to where you are today?
• Explain what your education path looked like. Did your education guide you to the career you’re currently in or did things shift along the way? What education, training, or certifications have you acquired? Do you use them in your daily work?
• What advice would you give to your younger self, if you choose your career path over again?
• Are there resources or any additional information you think is important for students to know if they are interested in learning more about the type of work you do?

After completing the letter, please email them to our Special Events Manager, Bret Carr at bcarr@jachicago.org

Sawhorse Revolution is an established but small non-profit with significant potential to expand its impact in the coming years.

Sawhorse was started as a way to provide meaningful out of school learning opportunities for young people, aiming to offer personal development benefits and career pathways that are currently lacking in the public education system. We are the only organization in our region offering free-of-cost, holistic carpentry and design programs to some of the most vulnerable and diverse youth in the city. Our model is simple, but potent; youth work with professional mentors in carpentry and design to create needed community projects. To date, Sawhorse students have built 57 structures, partnered with 100+ community groups, and Sawhorse has served over 800 youth in Central and South Seattle. The structures we build with our students stand as testaments to the long-term benefit of our programs; these projects can be anything from a tree house 30’ in the forest canopy, to a series of 25+ tiny homes for the homeless placed in city-sanctioned encampments, to a 225 sq. ft social justice lending library.

Sawhorse Revolution has a proven model that needs board support in the form of leadership, creative input, and fundraising. We are seeking board members that can drive Sawhorse Revolution to meet its full potential to provide life-changing design/build programs for young people. This is a volunteer position.

The board provides:

• Organizational strategy and financial oversight

• Governing direction in collaboration with the Executive Director

• Input on program design responding to evolving community needs

• Marketing support and outreach

• Fundraising support and/or resources to sustain and grow our mission

• Specialized expertise (such as legal, financial, human resources, non-profit management, etc) to sustain and grow our mission

Sawhorse board member position description:

• Provide fiduciary oversight

• Devote three-to-ten hours per month related to board work including a monthly meeting, break out meetings, and fundraising events

• Use your network and resources to benefit Sawhorse students by developing new supporters, spreading the word about our work, eliciting help for strategic projects, etc.

• Make a significant annual financial gift; “significant” means one of the three largest annual donations that you make to a non-profit. We do not have a set “give or get” dollar figure

• As an organization that focuses our effort on marginalized youth, we expect all board members to commit to developing their understanding of social justice and equity. We accept everyone where they are and strive for all of us to grow

Skills/Experience Desired:

• Leadership

• Non-Profit Management or Finances*

• Lived experiences that reflect our students or communities

• Professional experience in the building trades

• Education/Teaching background

• Ability to activate a fundraising base

Help young people develop new tech skills. Volunteer to shortlist entries to the Apps for Good Awards.

The Apps for Good Awards celebrate young people changing their world through technology. Students have designed an App, IoT device or Machine Learning product based on a problem or issue that they care about. They've moved through the product development process from ideation to technical feasibility, understanding the user, and finally prototyping.

Now we need your help to give feedback to the young people and pick out the best ideas. Using Apps for Good's online shortlisting platform, you can review and score as many entries as you like between 30th April to 14th May. Each review will take about 10 minutes.

It’s been harder than ever for young people to interact with professionals in the last year. By volunteering with Apps for Good you’ll be helping to fill that gap.
