Alder GSE is an innovative graduate school of education and a powerful workforce development engine, designed to address the intense staffing challenges of California’s TK-12 schools. Through a one-year residency program, Alder supports aspiring teachers in California to earn an MA and teaching credential through our uniquely effective apprenticeship model.

A key strategic financial goal is to raise and manage a $50M investment fund. We have raised $29M toward this goal. As of 2025, we have 565 resident teacher candidates enrolled, making us among the largest providers of teachers in California, and at this scale we support 70%+ of our $15M annual budget from tuition revenue. Our investment fund will be a key lever to strengthen our long-term financial sustainability and cover a significant portion of the remaining annual operating need.

We are currently searching for a new Board Director to help us set up, invest, grow and manage our $50M fund. We would like to find someone passionate about our work and values, ideally who is based in Southern California and brings at least 15 years of financial experience to the team. A background in equity or fixed income investments would be particularly valuable. We are also looking for someone who can share investment and financial expertise with our CEO/CFO as a member of our Finance Committee. For more details, see: bit.ly/3NdiieI

Our team is looking to add great people of integrity and passion to our Board of Directors who have hearts of service, are deeply connected to the mission of Legacy of Excellence Foundation (LEF), and wish to utilize their time, energy, and resources to help advance LEF's mission. Please find additional details regarding level of commitment, below:

I. Time Commitment (in meetings):

Our regular meetings happen once a month (currently every fourth Saturday) for 75 minutes via Zoom. All LEF Board Directors are expected to attend each of these meetings. However, should an extenuating circumstance arise, preventing someone from attending a given meeting, we just ask that he/she give notice to the team as far in advance as possible and then be sure to review the minutes and notes, post-meeting.

II. Time Commitment (out of meetings):

All LEF Board Directors are expected to devote at least one hour per week to LEF, outside of regular meetings. This can entail an array of things, such as support with fundraising, board cultivating, marketing, creating/revising policy, etc. This particular time expectation may be slightly more, depending on the office you hold and/or committee(s) you are part of (we currently do not have any committees yet). For example, outside of typical modes of support, the Board Chair is expected to do a little more than everyone else (e.g., meet with the Founder regularly to strategize).

III. Financial Commitment:

While constituting only a small fraction of LEF’s general endowment, regular financial contributions from each Board Director are important. This practice ensures that each Board Director has “skin in the game” and that the organization has a predictable repository that it can rely on, apart from revenue generated from services offered at the project level (e.g., school fees). Seeing that the Board is active in procuring financial resources for LEF also helps to motivate external supporters (and potential grant/funding agencies who may wish to undertake due diligence) to give on behalf of LEF and its supported projects. As such, either by a.) solely contributing via personal donations, b.) solely contributing via external fundraising activities, or c.) contributing via a hybrid/combination of personal donations and external fundraising activities, each LEF Board Director is expected to raise financial contributions for LEF (and its projects) in the minimum total amount of $6,000 per year.

Each component above is fleshed out even more in our Charter/Bylaws and Processes & Procedures Manual in terms of rationale, specificity, etc.

This opportunity will place you in a one-time mentor dynamic with a young Philadelphian where you discuss your career, work, life journey or a balance of multiple before participating with them in a technical workshop lead by an instructor, centered on storytelling through creative design disciplines like animation or architectural design. This series of workshops is intended to expose low-income youth to the vast sort of opportunities available to help create a guiding light for them in their young learning journeys. American public education is grossly underfunded and learning losses from COVID-19 have only exasperated this dynamic. These sort of "in-context" learning opportunities are crucial for students continued development.
