You’re invited! We are currently welcoming new members to join our team of business and community volunteers to deliver our compelling SMART CHOICES workshop in middle schools in your community.CHOICES Education Group is a non-profit student wellbeing platform that brings live classroom workshops to eighth-grade students to empower them to thrive in school and in life.
SMART CHOICES is a live, in-person workshop that helps student discover their personal power and the impact their choices will have on themselves and others both now and in the future.
The workshop helps students consider the value of education for their future, and introduces them to skills in time management, decision making, goal setting and self-discipline. The content has recently been refreshed with a positive focus on high school graduation, personal empowerment and decision-making skills.
More than six million teens have participated in SMART CHOICES since 1985, and we have partnered with hundreds of organizations and engaged thousands of volunteer presenters to deliver it in their local communities.
Students give SMART CHOICES an approval rating of 85%, and teachers give it 97%. In a recent study investigating changes in student engagement in school, students indicated a 9% increase in appropriate engagement, a 9% decrease in inappropriate engagement and a 9% decrease in non-engagement coincident with SMART CHOICES. Engagement in school has been shown to be a reliable indicator of the probability of on-time high school completion.
In another study of at-risk students, those who participated in SMART CHOICES increased their school engagement 47% more than those who did not, as reported by their teachers. This indicates a strong correlation between participation in SMART CHOICES and positive school engagement.
Why would you do this? Being a volunteer SMART CHOICES Presenter is very fulfilling – you are the messenger! The workshop materials are time-tested and teacher approved. One presenter commented, “I wish this program was around when I was in school.” Who wouldn’t be pleased if a student told you afterward, “You really inspired me!”? You can help us turn a teen around today!
What’s the annual commitment? Three workshops, ten hours – and a caring heart. You’ll take our two-hour online training. We’ll then provide the materials you’ll need and will schedule you to co-present workshop sessions in local middle schools, three times during the school year – that’s 90 students! You’ll need to take some time off from work during the school day, but it’s well worth it for the sake of teens!

This session is with high school aged participants of the Youth About Business program. This session will provide a high-level overview of Moody's Investor Services and the critical role Moody's plays in the credit markets. Our goal is to help students better understand the role of rating agencies in the credit markets; the value of research and insights; and potential career pathways available at Moody's.*Presentation and Q&A Volunteers (1-2):
We are asking volunteers to present a high-level overview of Moody's and how businesses utilize their ratings and research (15 minutes). YAB will provide an 8-10 slide deck as a discussion guide. We will also host a live Q&A session (10 minutes) to give students an opportunity to revisit any topics from the presentation.
*Student Exercise Volunteers (6+):
YAB is challenging students to work through a public finance exercise (basic-level). We are seeking volunteers to work alongside a group of 6-8 students to answer questions and help them with their thought process as they work through the exercise. This is a skill-based volunteer experience, so no preparation required.
We do ask that volunteers take 1-2 minutes to introduce themselves and their role at the company as a part of their experience with the students.

https://www.chbob.org/volunteeruf.htmlTriunfadores - College Prep Program Description
Thank you for your interest in applying to be a volunteer for the Triunfadores - College Prep Program. This document outlines the structure of our organization/program, volunteer responsibilities, and what can be gained from this great experience.
Structure of Our Organization
Children Beyond Our Borders (CBOB) is a nonprofit organization that houses both international and domestic efforts to help at-risk youth find peace, prosperity and well-being through education and empowerment. CBOB’s Education Initiative offers academic services to Alachua county students and their families. This initiative includes monthly educational workshops and access to the Triunfadores College Prep Program (CPP). The CPP specifically strives to support minority students in school and through their journey to attend college by offering tutoring and mentoring services. Through education, empowerment, and the encouragement of the community, we inspire children to act on their great educational potential to reach their goals.
The CPP strives to support Alachua students in school and through their journey to attend college. They are matched with an education-trained volunteer who will tutor, mentor, and provide guidance (YOU!). The program has two tracks that are catered to the students’ ages and academic needs.
Track One is intended for students in grades K-7, where support is offered through:
Academic tutoring of school subjects.
Standardized testing practice (FSA Prep).
Tutoring with an emphasis on language arts, writing, and mathematics.
Track Two is intended for students in grades 8-12, where support is offered through:
Academic tutoring of school subjects.
Standardized testing practice (FSA).
AP Testing and midterm/final exam tutoring.
Tutoring on college entrance exams (SAT & ACT).
Mentoring on class choice, career path exploration, and college research.
Mentoring through the college application process.
Mentoring through financial aid applications and scholarship searches.
Development of professional skills (resume-building, interview prep, cover letters, etc.).
Distribution of resources (scholarship information, templates, etc.).
Volunteer Responsibilities
As a volunteer, your responsibility is to be there for your student. Once you are paired one-on-one with a student, you will be expected to help them with their assignments, prep them for their standardized tests, and mentor them through areas they are struggling with, be it academic or professional. While the outline of services of the CPP may look overwhelming, you will be trained and ready to complete all the tasks listed.
More specifically you will be asked to:
Follow the CPP Code of Conduct.
Arrive on time for volunteering sessions.
Sessions take place every Monday from 6:00-7:30 PM and Friday from 6:00-7:30 PM
Location: Zoom
Create small lesson plans (10 minutes) each week based on simplified state standards.
You will be trained for this.
Upon acceptance into the program, pay $20 for a background check.
Have open communication with your student and their family.
What Can Be Gained
Tutoring/Mentoring is very rewarding within itself. This program allows you to form a bond with a student that is enthusiastic to learn and succeed, despite the struggles they may face. Additionally, this program also offers a great opportunity to gain experience in the education field. You will be structuring lesson plans, teaching concepts, and even advising students—all very valuable skills to develop. This program provides an opportunity to not only help an underprivileged student, but also the community.

The Finance and Investment Challenge Bowl (FICB) is a quiz bowl tournament for high school students, testing their knowledge of personal finance and economics.FICB helps meet the need for better financial literacy by reinforcing classroom education at very little additional cost to the schools, and aligns with the new Wisconsin teaching and learning standards in economics and personal finance. In our typical format, student teams meet at a tournament which celebrates their learning in an atmosphere of friendly competition. The tournament takes place as a “field trip” during the school day and lasts from 8:30 am until approximately 1:30 pm. Due to the covid pandemic, we will conduct FICB virtually but still need volunteers. Several games are held simultaneously throughout the day and we allow one hour per game. Each game is staffed by a volunteer quizmaster, scorekeeper, and several judges. Volunteer roles are:
1. Quizmaster. Reads the questions/works with judges to decide if student answers are correct (we provide questions and answers in a handout)/in general has control of the game to keep on schedule, make sure questions are asked in the correct sequence, etc. Quizmasters need good knowledge of the subject matter and the personality to be comfortable speaking “in public” (actually on camera) and have some give and take with the students to make it fun and educational for them
2. Scorekeeper. Keeps score and announces it several times during each game so students know where they stand in the game. The math is not hard…adding and subtracting 5s and 10s.
3. Judges (2 or 3 per room). Some questions are multiple choice and the judges don’t have a role with those. But for the open-ended/short answer questions, student answers sometimes need interpretation and close listening to decide if a given answer is correct (and deserves points) or is incorrect. Judges can “talk among themselves” to decide if answers are correct and quizmasters can weigh in on correctness also.
