Youth About Business teaches business to high school students through hosting a series of team-based Mergers and Acquisitions simulations. Over the course of a week, students will work in teams of 4-5 and assume the roles of the Executive Management of a public company to perform a M&A transaction.

The camp is an intense competition. Many students have very limited exposure to the business world, so students appreciate the team advisors for helping them understand these very complex cases. Each team advisor will cover a specific part of the transaction process to help demystify business and prepare students for their transactions.

The camp is both an educational opportunity and a competition for the students. Advisors act as both “paid” consultant and teachers during their experience. You should approach your role as advisor as if you are advising a client on the pros and cons of a deal.

The analyst session volunteers will help a team of 4-5 high school students understand how to conduct research on a public company. In addition to helping students with their research, volunteers will walk students through a SWOT analysis and other tools to frame their company exploration. (Session prep materials provided)

Examples of research topics to explore:
• What is the primary business? In what industry would you classify the business?
• What is the size of the company? (by sales, by employees, by market cap)
• Who are the largest competitors?
• How to create a SWOT Analysis and other frameworks

At the end of the session, students should be able to speak to the basics of their company. They will also have a focused list of items to research on their own.

The Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute is a nonprofit in San Diego, CA. Students in our research immersion program gain experience from hypothesis development, field work, designing and running experiments, collecting and analyzing data, to communicating their results. The Spring Symposium marks the students’ program graduation and an opportunity for them to present their research.

This Spring, students will present their research on ecological risk assessment of sediments in the Tijuana River Estuary (TRE), an important ecosystem and infamously polluted site in San Diego, CA. Using the California Purple Sea Urchin, students assessed the effects of chemical pollution on sensitive invertebrate embryos developing in TRE sediments collected at four sites during dry and wet weather events. Our students are thrilled to have the chance to present their work to you!

The seminar is estimated to last 1 hour and 15 minutes. Students' presentations will be followed by a Q&A session. The students are eager to answer questions, so please ask them! Beyond Q&A, you are welcome to share information on career resources and provide relevant career advice.

Email christine@bozinstitute.org your interest in attending.

We inspire youth to become active participants in their own futures. We are committed to providing high-quality accessible STEM programs to all students especially females, people of color, and youth from underserved neighborhoods.

For every two students in a class, there is a mentor as a resource and guide. The mentors are real world practitioners, using skills that they have learned in the CS and STEM fields, to help advance students’ knowledge in these subject areas. This also creates community-building capacity because we encourage open conversations on what the STEM field is and what it looks like to be a professional in the field, encouraging students to find their own path. Our mentors are passionate about helping the next generation of STEM leaders, ensuring that the future of STEM leadership is rich in diversity and talent.

Your participation allows us to bring our programming courses to young people who might not otherwise be able to participate. We rely on the generosity of volunteers like you to achieve our mission, and we are sincerely grateful.

Through the VIRTUAL My Brother's Keeper Coding Makerspace with a mentoring program for Black and Hispanic middle and high school males via Skype or other online video platform. The virtual program will help mentor underserved youth who have not been able to go to school to receive these services and who need added mentoring to support them as they have often been impacted more than other students during the COVID-19 health pandemic.

Mentors should meet virtually at least 1 hour a week in a 1 on 1 virtual meeting with a student or a group of students. In that meeting, you and the student may discuss any of the following topics:

Career and college topics in developing tech skills as well as business skills. Life skills, perseverance, leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, and character development are also important mentoring topics.

Business topics our students need are entrepreneurship and tech startup skills development.

Some tech topics we hope mentors may also address with the students are cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and physical computing.

Volunteers who are STEM and computer science professionals from ethnically diverse backgrounds are especially needed to participate as tech role models for our students so that the young men see people who reflect their identities in the tech industry.

In addition, financial contributions you make to support this program and help you can provide with fundraising efforts are appreciated. Your support makes our world a better place.
