Each year, BUGSS mentors a team of high school students from throughout the Baltimore/MD/VA area who participate in the iGEM bioengineering competition. Our team needs to design a project that used biotechnology to address an authentic societal need. This year's team of 20 students is in its early stages, and on May 19th, we could use help with one or more of these activities:

1) Helping students develop their project idea (perform internet research to assess the feasibility of their project ideas, discover what research has already been performed, evaluate the quality of the information that they find online, and think about how to narrow the scope of their project).

2) Deliver a talk to the students on leadership and teamwork. As part of the competition, students will need to design a project, perform research, engage in outreach, and discuss the ethical implications of their research. Our team of 20 students will need to work together to accomplish all of these tasks with different members taking leadership over specific tasks. We would like to prepare our students for this process so that we maintain strong team dynamics and use everyone's skills to the fullest. A 30-45 minute interactive talk on the importance of leadership, leadership styles, management, delegation, etc. would be very helpful for our team.

3) Teaching lab skills. Our students will begin lab work in earnest in June, but on May 19th, they will continue learning fundamental lab techniques like micropipetting, plasmid DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, etc. We would appreciate any mentors who can help teach these skills to our students and answer questions about the methods and scientific principles.

This event includes a lovely luncheon, fashion show and silent auction. We also recognize the superlative contributions of the "Volunteer of the Year" of our organization, as well as that of other organizations in our community.

The mission of the Friends of Music is to support music and music education in our community. We do this by utilizing the funds raised from this event to support the concerts we put on and donating to the public middle and high school music departments for items needed, but not funded by the school budgets.

Volunteers will be performing functions such as greeting guests, selling raffle tickets, handing out programs, etc.
