Your contribution to the success of FIRST programs and ultimately to the success of FIRST is immeasurable. The time, responsibility and expertise of a Mentor or Coach will vary but the one constant is that you are bringing something to your team that they need to learn, grow and succeed.

Opportunity Details
Section Leader - An adult responsible for the supervision, planning and delivery of the programme for the Drey, Colony, Pack, Troop or Unit and the management of the Section. It is possible for this to be a role shared between two or more volunteers.Assistant Section Leaders - One or more adults appointed to assist the Section Leader in all aspects of the role. It is good practice, but not necessary, to have one or more Assistant Section Leaders.
Section Assistants - One or more adults who assist the Section Leader in planning and delivering programmes to young people in the Movement.
Helpers - Additional adults (for example parents or subject experts from the community) may be used on a regular or occasional basis to support the delivery of the programme. The Personal Enquiry and criminal records disclosures check requirements detailed in Rule 3.27(b), 4.28(b) and 5.19(f) must apply wherever applicable for these adults. A person who requires a Personal Enquiry (including where relevant a criminal records disclosure check) [Rules 3.27, 4.28, 5.19] and who does not have an active role on Compass that includes a criminal records check must be registered on Compass as an Occasional Helper SV. This Occasional Helper role on Compass is not otherwise part of the Appointment Process, carries no membership status and is only provided to enable the Personal Enquiry and criminal records disclosure checks to be conducted if required by Rules 3.27, 4.28 and 5.19.

Austin Partners in Education (APIE) is a 2022 official charity of the Austin Marathon. We will be manning the Mile 5 Aid Station on race day, Sunday, February 20. We are looking for 80+ volunteers to join us from 6:00 to 9:30 a.m. Volunteers will help set-up, organize, and distribute drinks on the course. They also cheer on the runners and keep the aid station area clean and safe for the athletes. All volunteers will be required to wear masks and social distancing guidelines will be followed. APIE will have coffee, water, and snacks available for volunteers. We are happy to provide a participation certificate and/or sign documentation for volunteer hours if needed.This is a great volunteer opportunity for individuals or groups! Support Austin ISD students by becoming a mentor! APIE mentors work one-on-one with students during the school day. They help students improve their social and study skills, strengthen their communication skills, and build self-confidence. They inspire students to develop new interests, explore career possibilities, and achieve their personal and academic goals. Mentors can choose to work with Austin ISD middle and high school students (6th through 12th grades) at any Austin ISD school.APIE mentors should be:
• Positive, caring adults
• Able to commit to 30-45 minutes each week to meet with the student consistently throughout the school year
• Non-judgmental and supportive
• Good listeners
• Willing to complete a background check
APIE mentors receive:
• Initial mentor training
• Introduction to supportive strategies to use with students in building effective mentor relationships
• Support from an on-campus mentor coordinator

Interested in helping students with math? Enjoy working with middle school students? Then the Math Classroom Coaching (MCC) program is for you! Join us as we help Austin ISD students increase their understanding of math and confidence in their math skills.About the MCC Program:
• Volunteers work with a small group of 2 to 4 middle school students once a week for 45 minutes in a classroom with other volunteers and a teacher present.
• You can choose the class time that works best for you, with options in the mornings or afternoons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at Dobie, Covington, Martin, and Webb middle schools.
• You will receive training prior to your first session, and lessons with answers in advance each week.
• All volunteers must complete a background check.

A trusted caring adult spends at least one hour per week with their youth mentee using Be A Mentor’s Virtual Mentoring Platform.Mentors focus on goal setting, homework help, and career exploration. While there may be a focus on homework help in the meetings, these sessions are more than just tutoring. Mentees form a personal relationship with their mentor to build resilience, social engagement, and a support network.
Virtual mentoring removes barriers of distance, requires no commute time, and can offer a flexible schedule.

Dean Kamen, FounderEngage PreK-12 (ages 4-18) students in exciting, mentor-based, research and robotics programs that help them become science and technology leaders, as well as well-rounded contributors to society.
FIRST works because our programs use strategies known to increase student interest in STEM: hands-on learning, working as a team on real-life problems, exposure to careers and adult mentors, emphasis on FIRST Core Values, and a culminating celebration where students can showcase what they created and learned.
FIRST participants also develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, and communication, preparing them for success in school and the workforce, no matter what path they take.
It’s way more than building robots. FIRST Tech Challenge teams (up to 15 team members, grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format.
Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.
The really cool thing about FIRST Tech Challenge is...all skill levels are welcomed and needed, technical or non-technical. Student and adult team members are encouraged to bring any skills they already have, like coding, electronics, metalworking, graphic design, web creation, public speaking, videography, and more. Adult coaches guide students as they gain skills and confidence in a supportive, inclusive environment.
As we work as a community to prepare young people for a STEM future, FIRST aims to ensure its programs are having a lasting, positive impact on participants across all demographic groups. Our rigorous multi-year longitudinal study, conducted by Brandeis University Center for Youth and Communities, provides strong evidence that participation in FIRST does just that. Even with just one year of FIRST participation, study participants are 2-3xs more likely to have gains in STEM outcomes than a comparison group of peers not participating in FIRST.
