"A Christmas Carol" is Hartford Stage's annual gift to the community - a beloved theatrical telling of Charles Dickens' classic yuletide tale. Each year, thousands of students from across the region attend a performance. For many of them, it is their first time seeing a live theatrical event. Due to demand from area schools, we have added more matinee performances to our schedule this year.

Hartford Stage seeks volunteer ushers for student matinees between December 3 - December 19 (see schedule of shifts for details). Performances begin at 10:30 am, and ushers need to arrive an hour earlier. Hartford Stage seeks up to 12 volunteers from The Hartford per performance.

As primary members of the Front of House Staff, Hartford Stage Ushers are responsible for a variety of show-related duties. Ushers are trained in Customer Service, Hospitality and Patron Assistance skills, and through this work may develop an expertise in seating procedures.

Ushers are responsible for greeting patrons, performing basic seating-related duties, providing information, and accessibility accommodation duties. For student matinees, an important function is helping to guide the efficient and safe disembarkation from buses, moving students inside the theatre and into their designated seats swiftly.

Hartford Stage Ushers are given information about the theatre, the performance, and current exhibitions in both the upper and lower lobbies. They are encouraged to share this information when asked by our enthusiastic patrons. Every usher is given a basic training session prior to a volunteer shift, and then can be responsible for handling a variety of patron requests and providing the best possible Patron Service at Hartford Stage. When Volunteering at Hartford Stage Front of House, our Usher staff is guided by House Management in learning and employing best practices in this regard.

Ushering for this production is a three-hour time commitment, and involves standing and walking during the duration of this time. Once the audience is seated and the show has begun, ushers may watch the performance from the standing room area or from unclaimed seats in the auditorium. (Student matinees are typically sold out; no seating is guaranteed to ushers while they are working their shift.)

Personal presentation skills are very important, and professional guidance is provided in the Usher training. All skills learned in this volunteer position will prove to be transferable to almost any professional theatre operation, and especially to any subsequent show at the Hartford Stage. We would welcome any employees of The Hartford to return as volunteers later in the season for matinee or regular evening performances.

Employees of The Hartford are encouraged to wear company-branded shirts, buttons, or caps with khakis or dark slacks.
