Join Project LEDO in our mission to inspire and empower underrepresented youth to become science and technology leaders! Volunteers will have the opportunity to mentor and coach students through our LEGO Robotics After-School Program.

We are excited to be bringing LEGO Robotics to students at KairosPDX this spring, starting Wednesday, April 19th. KairosPDX is a K-5 charter school that focuses on closing achievement and opportunity gaps for children of color.

Volunteers will be working with small groups of 3-4 students with either the Spike Prime Program or We do Program. During the program volunteers will assist students in not only building and coding robots, but they will also help to develop their confidence, teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. These abilities are necessary for students to realize their full potential and will give them greater success in their chosen career path.

In Kenya, “Garages” are traditionally seen as physical spaces for men to build and create. However, “Karakana,” which means ‘garages’ in Swahili, disrupts this stereotype thinking by creating virtual ‘garage’ spaces for young girls to build and create in their own unique way. The pandemic has made the technology divide even more visible. According to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “Making these technologies available to all is an essential part of building back stronger communities and economies and addressing many of the world's most pressing challenges.” In response, this project aims to:

Empower girls to interact with basic technology creation tools in a fun interactive way. This project will have 500 girls contributing to the creation of a virtual persona that has all the freedoms and achievements they aspire to have. The building process will introduce them to new technology. It will also spark in them a creative imagination about what a girl without limits looks like. The other 500 participants will be volunteers and animators who will see this process in action and make it visible globally. Furthermore, schools in Kenya will have access to the Cloud space and host these spaces in computer stations. Teachers in this process will be integrated into this process and in the future, be able to host these hybrid workshops themselves.

Support girls in creating an avatar that reflects who they are. Being a girl is defined mostly by limitations in what a girl can and cannot do. This project addresses this by introducing a digital space in which girls not only can be anything they want, but also get to create a liberated version of themselves they can use to bring light to the limitations imposed on them both in the classroom and in society at large. This will give girls the tools for advocating for themselves using digital tools while redefining gender stereotypes associated with STEM learning. Rural girls are the most marginalized of the female gender. Therefore, by creating their own virtual advocate, they will also provide valuable information with regards to what is missing to achieve gender equity in Kenya as well as to get more girls into STEM
As a volunteer design advisor, you will collaborate with the girls in learning different aspects of design: graphic, motion and 3D in the avatar creation process.

Required expertise:
1. Graphic design
2. Motion design
3. Game design
4. Animation
