The mission of the Virginia Hispanic Foundation is to support the aspiration of Hispanic students on their journey to be productive and successful leaders in the community through education and mentorship. The Hispanic community represents 20% of the population in the U.S. and students ages 5-19 are the largest age group. Hispanic students under perform non-Hispanic students across many academic outcomes, have the highest risk of dropping out due to language barriers, lack of resources, and entering the workforce at a young age to help support their families. A “familia-family style” form of group leadership mentoring for Hispanic elementary, middle and high school students. Held during the school day for 1 hour. Volunteers are trained to be leadership coaches who present bilingual leadership lessons with students that are provided during each session. Studies have shown that at risk students were successful in school when they had the support of a caring adult who showed interest in them.*Programs may also include focusing and de-stressing techniques implemented through mindfulness/yoga activities in the sessions, and Hispanic guest speakers who inspire students to their next level of achievement.
