Clorox Employees,Paying for college is one of the greatest barriers for most students. College financial aid is particularly important in Oakland where over 70% of Oakland Unified students qualify as low income.
Right now, in the heat of the financial aid application season it's crunch time, and schools are hard pressed for hands on support to help students complete their scholarship and public aid applications.
As long time supporters of the Marcus Foster Education Fund and our Oakland/Pleasanton scholars, we would like to invite you to have an on-the-ground experience of the scholarship process.
We are seeking Clorox volunteers to work with students 1-1 in the evening, morning or afternoon to prepare strong scholarship applications for March 2nd deadline.
We will train you to coach students through Marcus Foster's Making REAL Change application which can qualify Oakland students for a Clorox scholarship, among other financial assistance awards.
If you are interested in working directly with students to help increase the pool of eligible Clorox scholarship recipients, now is the time to jump in!
All interested Volunteers /Scholarship Application Assistants will also receive a link to a tutorial of the Making REAL Change Scholarship application.
Respond to this post to sign up to attend the Marcus Foster's Making REAL Change Volunteer Orientation. Please contact Basma Khairy, bkhairy@marcusfoster.org | 510-858-2174 if you have any questions regarding volunteer opportunities at Marcus Foster Education Fund.
Your time and service makes real change possible!

Annie's Hope offers Camp Courage, four night/five day overnight experiences, for kids ages 6-11 who are surviving the death of someone significant. The cause of death varies from long term illness, short term illness, suicide, murder, and accidents. The length of time since the death varies as well. Some campers arrive not knowing anyone else while some attend with their siblings. The campers represent families of lower socioeconomic means, as well as middle class families. The common thread that runs through each of them is the death of someone they love.A week in a camp environment as a cabin counselor or arts and crafts volunteer is hard work. However, you will most definitely return home feeling more energized than when you left. Your time at this camp will not be filled with sadness, depression, and tears but instead by laughter, hope and newly discovered friends. Your mere presence conveys a message to the campers of acceptance and encouragement. That in itself will foster a new understanding that the campers are not alone in their grief, that their grief is OK and survivable, and that there is hope in tomorrow. That is the magic of making a difference in the life of a child who needs your care and support.
The greatest need is for cabin counselors, especially males, yet we definitely need arts and crafts volunteers and nurses. Cabin Counselors are assigned a cabin of campers along with three to four other counselors. They are responsible for those campers 24 hours a day for five days. The counselors accompany the campers to every activity and event. The ratio of Cabin Counselor to camper is 1:3 or 4.
Arts and Crafts volunteers are assigned to the arts and crafts area. There will be 3-4 volunteers in arts and crafts. One of those volunteers will be designated as the Arts & Crafts Coordinator. All the volunteers will work together to plan, host and organize arts and crafts activities, yet the Coordinator will be asked to plan some special activities and communicate with the Camp Director regarding supplies needed. When arts and crafts is “closed” in the evenings, the volunteers will assist cabin counselors. One major difference between the cabin counselor role and the arts and crafts role is the type of relationship you will probably experience with the campers. Cabin counselors will get to know 9-12 campers very well while arts and crafts volunteers will meet almost all the campers but probably not get to know them quite as well.
The camp nurse will administer meds, bandage scraps and cuts, and provide tender loving care when a camper simply needs a hug. The nurse may volunteer for a one week, both weeks, part of one week, or part of both weeks.

HackHW is the first ever hackathon organized by the students of Harvard Westlake high school in Studio City, California. Harvard Westlake is one of the best high schools in the nation for computer science. It has an amazingly comprehensive computer science curriculum and very talented computer science students. However, as high school computer scientists, many HW students lack coordinated opportunities, and the industry mentorship necessary to develop their skills outside of the classroom.Hack HW is their solution to this problem. A small 50-student, 36 hour event, open to any Harvard-Westlake high school student, Hack HW not only encourages students to put their programming skills to practice, but also seeks to provide students, who may not have had the opportunity to try computer science, with an idea of what it means to enter the tech world.
To ensure that students are pursuing realistic projects and have the resources necessary to overcome programming and planning hurdles, this hackathon needs mentors with experience in entrepreneurship, iOS development, web development, or Arduino programming, 3D Printing, soldering and more throughout the event. That's where you come in. Volunteer your time for one or more shifts and help inspire our future leaders to create solutions with software/hardware hacking!
