Young African students have become less motivated to continue studying science in school because of lack of role models in the science field. Even with the science laboratory practicals and hands on activities they are involved in, they have few career icons to look up to apart from their science teachers.

African students are in dire need of role models in the science field that will motivate them to pursue their chosen career path, a constant connection with scientists across their locality or world wide through our weekly science career talks on zoom from scientists from all around the world will help them expand their horizon to see the big picture beyond their class rooms and laboratories, this will in turn empower them to be the great scientists they aspire to become.

Title: General Volunteers/Internship roles - Non-profit
Estimated Hours/Week: 5+ hours/week
Expected Commitment: 3+ months

About Pandemic Professors:

The closure of schools that began in the spring has served to only widen the educational gap between economically disadvantaged students and others. With school closures taking place for the foreseeable future it is imperative that we give economically disadvantaged students the attention they need to not fall behind.

Pandemicprofessors.org, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, was founded in April by UC Berkeley alumni to achieve this mission. It is a 100% volunteer-based organization from top-to-bottom. We have partnered with a national job training nonprofit to provide educational help to the children of the low-income parents in their programs. We are also connecting with underserved schools and districts across the country to help disparaged and at-risk youth. We will be seeing a huge influx of students and we are asking interns with a wide range of skills and interests to assist us with multiple operations.

As a volunteer/intern, you will be responsible for helping the organization run smoothly and deliver the best services possible to students in need. You will interact with staff and tutors. We have specific roles opened, but can also create positions to fit personal goals and skills. You will be able to grow a diverse range of skills tailored to your professional interest. This is an position you have ownership of. We are a 100% volunteer run organization, and have no paid roles.

-Show employers, fellowships, and grad schools that you took action to help the most vulnerable during a global pandemic.
-Gain valuable leadership experience with a non-profit.
-The personal fulfillment of helping others in need.
-A letter of recommendation when needed, for grad school or other opportunities
-Grow current skills or learn new ones
-We can sign off on class credit

We will be stuffing backpacks with school supplies to be given away to students of the Oakland Unified School District. There will be seven assembly stations set up to open boxes, unzip the backpacks, pass them along, count, close the backpack, box, and prepare for loading. We are not asking our volunteers to do any lifting/loading into the trucks as that will be done by the trucking company staff using a forklift.

Growing up as a young woman in India’s patriarchal society comes with challenges on all fronts. Even in the 21st century, the story of every woman is entangled in discrimination and violence that has consequences to their freedom, aspirations, and mobility. Gender seems to be a dominant variable that influences the opportunities, potential, and safety of women and girls, universally.

But. All is not glum, women across the globe are raising their voices and demanding for justice, equality and rights. We at Milaan have witnessed this transformation and seen the power of young women to challenge the norms and attitudes that allow discrimination. Now, Milaan is stepping into yet another initiative to leverage the strength of the collective through ‘Rise for Her’- a community for women aimed to foster a nurturing space to convene, share and create social impact through a journey of self-transformation and learnings.

A 40-hour journey spread over one year, the initiative is aimed at women between 18-40 years of age to come together in a safe space to learn, share, connect and take action to promote gender equality.

The program has numerous and exciting workshops with experts, a chance to mentor girls in rural communities, and design impact projects to fundraise + campaign for advancing equality!
