School teachers and afterschool leaders need help finding quality sites where they can take their students/scouts to learn about interesting science, technology, and engineering. Our free, no-registration online guide quickly helps teachers find sites near them, and helps everyone by reducing the time they spend communicating common information. You are important because you know your local area. You can search online for sites and make sure your area is represented in our guide. You can use our online form to help you organize useful data about sites.
Here are the steps to follow:
Pick an area of the country. Your local area is a good start.
Go to our Field Trip Guide: http://energyteachers.org/fieldtripguide.php
See if there are any entries in your area/state/province. If not, we really need you. If so, you might be able to add good sites.
Search online, or if you have contacts in science/technology/engineering related areas, ask around. Look for sites that regularly allow school groups, or are public access. Kinds of sites include power plants, high-efficiency buildings, nature centers, labs, colleges and universities, municipal water sites, historical sites, etc. You can look at the sites we already have to get more ideas.
Enter in the form by clicking the link at the bottom of the page in the link: "Add a site to the guide"
Enter as much info as you can. It's very useful to teachers to have a contact name/email/phone, to know which ages are appropriate, and whether there are any costs. Google maps can help get the latitude and longitude—Just right click the site on a Google map and click "What's here?" and the latitude and longitude will show in a box at the bottom of the map.
The second page will ask you what features may be found on the site, e.g. "transportation alternatives" or "history" or "hydropower."
Your entry will be checked/edited by the organization, then made public.
