The Giving Farm is a farm-to-food bank program, managed by these four bodies: Agriculture Sciences Program at Westminster High School (“WHS”), the Orange County Food Bank (“CAPOC”), the Orange County Farm Bureau (“OCFB”) and Solutions for Urban Agriculture (“SFUA”). We aim to promote student and community engagement in the California agricultural industry. The project expects to deliver over 200,000 pounds of produce annually for consumption by low-income communities. Our goal is to alleviate a major symptom of poverty, hunger, by providing a basic human need, food. This enhances opportunities for students and volunteers to learn about sustainable agricultural land use and the connection to local food networks and also provides nutrition education about the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles for at-risk youth. We are a fully functional farm with fields of crops, greenhouse, livestock, orchard, native garden, hydroponics/aquaponics, etc. Our demand for volunteers varies based on the harvest cycle but we do need help year-round. We are currently between harvest cycles preparing for the next round of crops which will most likely be watermelon, squash, lettuce, and a few others.
The projects we are looking for volunteers to help with also varies but you may expect to work on the following tasks:
● Planting seeds in the fields
● Planting cane berries along fence
● Transplanting strawberries
● Installing irrigation systems
● Maintaining the farm by weeding, clearing debris, repairing tools, etc.
We are very flexible on the dates/times for volunteers. We can plan a volunteer event around your groups schedule. Let me know what works best and I will add the shift to this portal.

West Allegheny Middle School's Parent Teacher Association is hosting our 1st SPRING CARNIVAL on Friday May 18, 2018, 6-8 pm. The PTA is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to our children's educational success, health and wellbeing. The SPRING CARNIVAL'S purpose is two fold: serve as a FUNdraiser for our many PTA sponsored activities such as student field trips and to provide our students with a fun night filled with karaoke, carnival games, photo booth and most importantly to build camaraderie among our students! All proceeds from the carnival ticket entry will directly benefit our students- we are very excited to offer our students this night to spend with their fellow students. This past Fall, the PTA hosted a "Fall Fest" which was one of the best attended events in recent years. We expect the Spring Carnival to be just as well attended.West Allegheny Middle School is in the West Allegheny School District near the Pittsburgh airport and has over 750 students and 70 staff members. We anticipate over 400 + students to attend the event. We would LOVE some help from the Kohl's Volunteer Program.
The PTA will need assistance in setting up for the event, manning the welcome table to sell tickets for games/food, manning the concessions stand, the many carnival games, lawn games, photo booth and the tear down of the event. We will also have door prizes for the students. The event will take place throughout the 1st floor of the Middle School in the gym, cafeteria and lobby area. Lawn and carnival games will also be held outside next to the school.
Total PTA membership is around 40 adults and we are working hard to have these kind of events for our students but are in need of some additional adult help during the event. Your organization will be announced at the PTA meetings and acknowledged at the event on our "wall of donors." Thank you so much for your kind consideration of our event as we try our best to build a strong foundation for our children's educational and personal success! Attached is our Carnival announcement that was published in our PTA newsletter.
