We are seeking new members of our Scholarship Committee. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to serve as a mentor or role model for low-income youth or first generation Latino youth!

These volunteers commit to attending 4 virtual meetings per year (1 hour quarterly) and participating in our annual Scholarship selection process (choosing one or more activities from: reviewing applications, interviews, mock interviews, or resume reviews). We also ask that each member make a personally meaningful donation to the Scholarship Fund, with no minimum amount.

Each year, we have over 100 graduates and up to 30 students can be chosen for a Camino Nuevo scholarship. Over 85% of our graduates attend postsecondary education each year. You will have a role in shaping their futures and helping them achieve their dreams!

“It's a fantastic opportunity to help young people in a way that is well-organised and works well for them and for me.” MyBigCareer Volunteer

We are recruiting now! Sign up today to be a volunteer Career Coach and help open up young people’s horizons.

In 1:1 sessions hosted online, you’ll listen and encourage underrepresented students aged 14-17, helping them know more about the careers they can aspire to and feel clearer about their future plans. Latest research by the Social Market Foundation found 42% of Free School Meals students do not know anyone in a prestigious profession, and 1 in 3 don’t get any career guidance from family and friends. By age 11, many have already formed ideas and stereotypes about what people like them might do in the workplace.

MyBigCareer’s programmes - delivered by 300+ volunteers - inspire, guide and equip less advantaged young people to thrive in the working world.

Our Coaches support over 2,500 students every year, but many more need our help. As a volunteer you will support young people by…

-Guiding students who may lack support and inspiration at home
-Assisting with goal setting and identifying pathways to employment
-Sharing insights from your professional journey to be relatable and inspirational for young people who are uncertain about the future

You don’t need to be a careers expert! You’ll attend a 3hr online training and
onboarding session before we deploy you.

As you will be working with young people we require you to have an Enhanced DBS check (we’ll do this for you) and have UK residency for the last 3 years.

We at SSMI feel everyone needs a mentor for different reasons. students in classes 7-10 struggle not only with adolescence and maturing into young men they need someone who they can call their own to confide in, guide them for future, give a patient hearing or just be that friend who they are comfortable with. The students at SSMI are a bit nervous, lack the confidence to share and therefore our understanding is with a mentor they will find that comfort to achieve their potential. A mentor is meant to be an experienced and trusted adviser or is ready to explore the right and wrong with his young student.
