LOVE believes that youth are the key to ending youth violence by giving young people opportunities to become leaders in their communities through positive engagement; skill based learning and self-expression.Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) is a festival that originated in Chicago in 2001 and has since spread to 17 cities in North America, making it the largest youth poetry festival in the world. LTAB uses the popular medium of spoken word as a way of engaging young people in literacy and oral tradition, leadership and community building. Youth from different schools, after completing the 12-week program, will compete in regional poetry slams, culminating in the semi finals on June 2nd at Senator O’Connor College School and the slam final on June 3rd at the Royal Cinema.
There are many opportunities to get involved with LOVE and the LTAB Festival. Volunteer opportunities and time commitments may vary depending on the volunteer roles and responsibilities.
Volunteer Responsibilities and Roles:
Event Coordinators
Manage the preparation of event materials prior to the event (i.e. shirts, IDs, bags, etc.)
Organize and coordinate transportation of on-site materials
Set up and tear down at event
Assist in any other pre-event duties as needed prior to the event
To assist staff in day of and post-event activities at the Louder Than a Bomb Festival
Hospitality Assistant
Serve beverages/food (if any), clearing and washing up
Provide water for performers
Usher
Politely direct and escort patrons to their seats
Provide patrons with programs and other relevant materials
Check assigned section for cleanliness
Visually sweep the theaters to check for potential safety issues and lost and found items
Be aware of and enforce appropriate house rules
Remain at assigned post throughout the event unless taking an assigned break
Must be aware of, and follow, the proper procedures for assisting patrons with disabilities.
Event Steward
Meet performers before the event and escort them to the venue/stage/fit
rooms/etc.
Welcome visitors in a polite and enthusiastic manner
Seat sponsors and audience
Respond to a range of queries and complaints
Check tickets and passes
Assist with crowd management
Follow health, safety and emergency procedures
Box Office
Register Slam teams
Sell and check tickets of patrons
General helpers/runners
Assist with the highest priority needs and in other event duties as needed
Social Media Volunteer
Live Tweet and Blog festival events
Promote the event on a cross section of social media platforms
Adobe CC and editing skills
Videographers/editors
• Shoot videos during the event of performances and behind the scenes
• Take video during the events of performances and behind the scenes
• Edit video as needed
• Upload and send to appropriate LOVE contact
• Video will be credited and videographers must sign a release form.
Photographers
• Take photographs during the events of performances and behind the scenes
• Edit photographs as needed
• Upload and send to appropriate LOVE contact
• Photographs will be credited and photographers must sign a release form.
Preliminary and Semi-Finals Scorekeeper
• Record all five scores from the judges
• Drop the highest and lowest score and calculate the middle three scores
• Keep and accurate record of the scores in case there are any disputes
• Take note of any scores that go over time and calculate the penalty accordingly
• Check over the scores to make sure they are accurately calculated
Preliminary and Semi-Finals Judges
• Score each poem between 0.0 and 10, basing scores on content and performance.
• When prompted by the host/MC, quickly show scores by raising the score cards up
• Stay consistent with scoring and reveal if there are any conflicts of interest, such as personally knowing, mentoring or working with any of the poets

Get involved with our amazing core volunteer teams and help us bring independent cinema to Vancouver all year-long!A volunteer position at VIFF’s year round office is a commitment of one 3-5 hour shift per week. Our office is open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday throughout the year. We extend these hours and include the weekend once we come into our busy festival season in September and October.
Office assistants work with the public as well as with VIFF office staff. As there is a customer service element to this position, excellent phone communication skills are expected and appreciated.
As an Office Assistant Volunteer, your duties include:
Box Office Helpline
Between the hours of noon-5pm Monday to Friday, this team provides ticketing service for customers who have issues using our website and find it difficult to physically come and purchase tickets at the Box Office. You will also assist with ticket exchanges and password resets. During your orientation, you will be given hands on training in our ticketing system called Audience View (AV). You will also be provided with an online and physical manual.
Website
You will assist customers in navigating our website and assist them through their purchase. Many folks have password issues logging into their account on our site – through AV you can help customers reset their passwords and gain access to their accounts. It is important that this team be very familiar with our website and we suggest you create your own account so that you are familiar with the customer’s experience.
General Information
Familiarity with our processes and policies as well as our calendar of events is key. You will answer questions like “Where do I park?”, “What time does the Box Office open?”, “What does stand-by mean?”. All this information is available on our website so it is important that you are comfortable and efficient at navigating it.
Data Entry
All departments have projects that this team is responsible for. These projects will include working with excel, word, Shiftboard, and submission programs. Staff will give you guidance in completing these projects.
Office Maintenance
Help the office manager organize supplies, clean the kitchen, and set-up rooms for meetings.
How do I Become a Volunteer?
-To volunteer with VIFF year-round, you must be 19 or older.
-All potential applicants must fill out a Volunteer Application form and go through a phone screening process. Applications can be found here: https://www.viff.org/Online/volunteer
-All information requested must be filled out fully and accurately to ensure placement.
-Volunteer applications are reviewed as they are received. Phone interviews are scheduled as positions become available.
-Volunteer positions are filled based on previous VIFF experience, interview and knowledge of VIFF culture, work and life related skills, and selected preferences. Please keep in mind that each team requires specific skills and qualifications as specified in the Team Descriptions.
-Once accepted, you will receive specific training and venue orientation before being added to the team.
-Volunteers must pass a two month training period before full volunteer benefits become available.
