Every year we help young people in the area enjoy new adventures; to experience the outdoors; interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Working alongside our youth members are adult volunteers, with a huge variety of roles and opportunities available.
Scout Leaders help young people in the 5 to 14 age range reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

This everyday adventure is possible thanks to our adult volunteers. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities for adventure, training, fun and friendship.

Our award-winning training scheme for volunteers means that adults get as much from Scouts as young people. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. Over 90% of Scout volunteers say that their skills and experiences have been useful in their work or personal life.

We operate flexible volunteering so whether it is one hour a month or 2 hours a week, we actively welcome your support.

For nearly 40 years, the Trail Guides of Flat Rock Brook have taught nature study classes outdoors to elementary school children from area towns. Today, Trail Guides teach thousands of students each year of all ages groups. This innovative volunteer program is seeking new volunteer teachers. If you have a special interest in nature and the outdoors, enjoy sharing your knowledge with children, and would like to learn more about the natural world, you may enjoy participating in Flat Rock Brook's volunteer Trail Guide program.

The training program is free. Sessions are held in March, April and May, September and October with indoor lectures and outside explorations on the trails. New recruits then observe experienced guides teaching children on nature walks. Graduated trail guides lead at least five nature walks weekday mornings or afternoons in April, May, June and at least five in September, October, and November. Trail Guides also participate in educational workshops and field trips to various natural areas throughout the region to help broaden their knowledge. Contact education director Jill Bennetta 201 567-1265 ext. 203 if you are interested in joining this program.

NNF currently has two projects in Uganda:
1. The Kibale Fuel Wood Project focuses on the scarcity of wood around Kibale National Park. The project seeks to empower locals to find alternatives for their energy needs through promoting efficient stoves and fast-growing native firewood crops, and has a substantial educational campaign that includes four village science museums, a travelling video show and yearly conservation competitions.
2. The Kibale Eco Char Initiative is working to eliminate the need for wood by creating biomass briquettes made from agricultural waste and recycled products.

As a volunteer you will be participating in all activities of both projects. These activities include manufacturing eco-briquettes, teaching students and staff at the Science Centers, assisting in building fuel efficient stoves, and whatever other current activities are happening in Uganda!

Our equine protection program educates the public about equine protection issues, advocates for public policies to protect animals, partners with corporations and community minded companies on behalf of animal-friendly policies, investigates animal cruelty and provides animal rescue. We work to reduce the suffering of at risk equines and those designated for human consumption through education and awareness about practices that cause enormous suffering. We are seeking volunteers with strong attention to detail to support our work by taking on projects such as social outreach, research, telephone communications, data entry, and general administrative support. Volunteers will work remotely from their home and will be assigned work based on availability, skills and interest.
As a volunteer in this role, you will learn more about equine welfare issues, acquire useful skills, and rest well knowing you're helping us help wild and domestic equines around the country.

Over 170 community advocates from foundations, peer nonprofits, giving circles, corporate giving programs, local government agencies, and the broader community evaluate applications (200+ a year) for their critical local impact. Less than 90 nonprofits are selected annually. Every featured organization has been “site visited” by at least one volunteer or Spur Local staff. We also complete a financial review, during which we review 990 filings, audited financials, and other key financial indicators to ensure financial viability and transparency. And all organizations in the Spur Local network must re-apply every four years. We leverage the region’s knowledge for the benefit of the entire community.

As a volunteer, your review of the applicants will help us to determine which nonprofits to include in the Spur Local network. Your comments also help us give feedback to unsuccessful applicants as they seek to improve their applications, and organizations, in the future.

To volunteer with us, you must:

- Live or work in the Greater Washington DC region
- Have a minimum of three years of professional experience.
- Have experience in and/or knowledge of the nonprofit sector, philanthropy, community development, or community organizing.
- Have familiarity, interest, or expertise in one or more of the social issues our applicants serve: Nature (Environment and Animal Services), Culture (Youth and Community Arts or Performing, Literary and Visual Arts), Education (Youth Education and Education and Enrichment; Mentorship and College Access; or Adult Literacy and Learning), or Human Services (Children, Youth and Families; Girls and Women; Immigrant and Refugee Services; Veterans and Military Families; Health, Wellness and Senior Services; Basic Needs, Food and Housing; Legal Services and Justice Programs; Life Skills, Training, and Employment; or Community and Civic Engagement)
- Not be a member of the board or staff of a nonprofit organization that is applying to be in the Spur Local network. More information for applying nonprofits is available here.
- Commit to 4-8 hours of reviewing from early March to mid-April. Time commitment is dependent on personal reviewing style; each reviewer will be assigned approximately 5-10 applications.

If you are interested, please email Chiara Frechette with your interest.
