Join Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC), and the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District (JMSWCD) for a day at the iconic Marriott Ranch in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

With a back drop of spectacular mountain views, this is a working farm that the Rappahannock River flows directly through. For several years Marriott Ranch has volunteered to protect the water resources on their property and improve the health of their cattle through conservation best management practices which provides and excellent opportunity to showcase conservation.

In the morning at 9:00am, we will be working with volunteers to plant trees and other vegetation in a riparian buffer along a stretch of a Rappahannock River tributary called Fiery Run. This conservation best management practice will provide wildlife habitat, decrease erosion and sedimentation, and help improve water quality. All attendees who join us for the restoration project are invited to join us for the celebration free or charge. Registration is required and is available at https://www.riverfriends.org/event/fromtherappahannock2018/

At 1:00pm the event will begin and we will be at the Marrtiott Pavilion with a wide range of food, drink, and activities. Children under 14 welcome at no charge.

We will have Rappahannock River oysters from the Oyster Company of Virginia, catered barbeque from Marriott Ranch, local wines and beers from the piedmont region, live music, hay ride tours of the property and conservation practices, fish shocking demonstrations from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF), and more!

Staff from a variety of conservation organizations will be available to answer questions and talk about local and regional environmental issues, land conservation, riparian buffers, and cost share programs available in the region.

We look forward to seeing you there and if you have any questions please let us know. Bryan.Hofmann@riverfriends.org 540-373-3448 ext 112

Eggstravaganza is one of the zoo’s largest events of the year. This event, which is free with admission, encourages families to participate in activities throughout the zoo. We want to engage the community in getting outdoors and exploring the zoo as they shake off the winter. There will be numerous activities for the kids to engage with such as hunting for six cluck-cluck doors throughout the zoo to collect treat-filled eggs, playing egg-cellent games, making fun crafts and yummy snacktivities. Then visitors can take their pictures with the Easter Bunny! There will also be educational, live animal programs where visitors will be able to see and touch some of our animals up close. We want to foster a day of fun in the sun and family engagement, strengthening family bonds and helping to create memories that will last. This event also serves to drive traffic to the zoo. Your volunteer time will not only help make this amazing and affordable event happen, but will also translate into increased funds for our conservation and education work that touches over 30,000 people each year.
