Volunteer with Pierce Conservation District from 10 AM - 12 PM at Adriana Hess Wetland Park in University Place on Friday, September 20th. Activities will include caring for existing plants in the demonstration gardens around the Bird Alliance building and removing invasive species such as Himalayan blackberry, non-native trees, and English ivy. This work supports water quality, our local wildlife, and pollinators. Exact meeting location will be provided after signing up.What will volunteers be doing at the event?
While the exact tasks at hand vary through the year, our projects focus on improving the open spaces, forests, and parks in our local cities. Healthy ecosystems and thriving wetlands are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and create a place for people to connect with the outdoors.
In order to create healthy forests and riparian zones, the work can include:
- Caring for existing plantings
- Adding a layer of tree mulch in the restoration spaces to reduce regrowth of invasive weeds
- Removing invasive species such as English ivy & Himalayan blackberry
Volunteers are kindly requested to [bring/wear/have/etc.]:
- Clothing that can get dirty
- Long pants and sleeves
- Sturdy shoes (closed toed shoes required, no sandals or flats; terrain may be muddy or uneven)
- Rain gear and warm layers (the event will happen rain or shine)
- Full water bottle!
We will provide:
- All necessary tools and training.

DESCRIPTION: Using just their phones, volunteers can contribute to a citizen science project that allows individuals to collect information for a global database that helps scientists monitor species populations, geographic distribution, and seasonal/migration patterns. Volunteers will simply download iNaturalist’s Seek app – a collaboration between WWF, iNaturalist, National Geographic Society, and others – and identify species using their mobile device’s camera. Once volunteers register, the images they take are uploaded to a global database that helps scientists track changes in populations and identify trends, to better understand how species are adapting to climate change, and ultimately, how those changes impact all of us.With a minimum group size of 75 volunteers, this opportunity could be turned into a WWF-Facilitated event featuring a virtual webinar. This webinar will provide an overview of biodiversity and the importance of protecting it, as well as details on how to use the Seek app, and guidance on how to acquire badges. This opportunity can also be self-facilitated by employee leads, using guidance from our Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt guide that can be found here: https://worldwildlifefund-my.sharepoint.com/personal/cheron_carlson_wwfus_org/_layouts/15/guestaccess.aspx?share=EX8KcznKvd1GjLeVYEUdrPUBkjcB-7QyfYXxf7f_qZ-LNQ&e=jSMQkY
PARTICIPANTS - To turn this into a WWF-Facilitated event, we ask for a minimum of 75 volunteers. As a self-facilitated event led by an employee lead, there is no minimum or maximum for this project.
LOCATION - Employee leads are in charge of selecting a location for this event.
FACILITATION - Available as a WWF-facilitated event or as a self-facilitated event led by the employee lead with guidance from WWF's Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt guide.
DURATION - As either a WWF-Facilitated or Self-Facilitated event, this event could take approximately 1-2 hours.
FUNDING REQUIRED - Whether this event is facilitated or not, no funding is required.

Help researchers unlock data through Zooniverse.org, the world’s largest platform for people-powered research, with over 2.7 million people of all ages worldwide participating in over 80 active projects, from classifying galaxies, marking cells for cancer research, transcribing historic handwritten documents, and more.To date, thousands of Microsoft employees have contributed over half a million classifications to Zooniverse projects!
During this session you will participate in PenguinWatch.org, a quick-to-learn site through which you can help researchers by tagging penguins in drone images. The data helps us understand the impact of climate change on this charismatic species and the health of our oceans.
You’ll hear directly from a Zooniverse team member about the impact of Penguin Watch, learn how to tag penguins, chicks and eggs in digital images, and spend most of the experience tagging penguins in the research project.
There is no preparation required. You will be guided through how to register for an account and how to tag penguins in the images. If you want to register for a Zooniverse account in advance, go to Zooniverse.org and select ‘register’ in the right corner. Please use your Microsoft email address so that your stats can be included in Microsoft’s overall stats on Zooniverse.
