This is a position which request a financial participation. Each week we invite children from the local underprivileged schools to stay at DAKTARI. We take between eight at a time, which provides a unique opportunity for them to benefit from a more individual learning experience.
As all the children come from underprivileged backgrounds we only charge them a minimal fee of R 20 for their stay.
You will be teaching these children. We believe that education is the only way to a better future, and therefore we have developed an educational program with special focus on the environment and wildlife. We have included lessons in life skills about relationships, substance abuse, safe sex, violence and respecting your environment.
Many of these children have not had the opportunity to learn about wildlife and therefore we encourage interaction with wild animals in order to stimulate a sense of responsibility for their heritage.
A very important aspect of DAKTARI is the wildlife orphanage. We care for animals that are hurt, orphaned or too tame to be rehabilitated into the wild. We provide them with good facilities, care and love. They also serve as a great education medium for the children who assist in the daily care, cleaning and feeding of these animals.
Because we cannot always guarantee having children at DAKTARI due to either the school holidays OR exam periods; DAKTARI will also periodically welcome local unemployed youths to the camp for our Job Hunting Programme. During these weeks they learn the skills they would need to find a job.

Come help us remove crayfish from Tapia State Park! Crayfish are a non-native species to California, and they're considered invasive because they cause quite a bit of damage to the aquatic ecosystems. They prey on native species, reduce water quality, and cause problems with creek bed erosion. We need your help in trapping and removing the crayfish as well as picking up trash along the stream.Registration is free, but required. Registered volunteers will receive an email confirmation with more details.
Have more questions? Contact us at volunteer@mountainstrust.org or call MRT Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm at (818) 591-1701 ext. 203.

Merazonia (www.merazonia.org) is a dynamic wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre located on 250 acres of Amazon rainforest, near Mera, Ecuador, South America. We combine passion for nature with a professional approach on animal care and release, along with rainforest conservation and wildlife monitoring.Volunteers help us in the day-to-day care of the animals. But for those more interested in construction and maintenance there is also plenty of work! We are currently caring for well over 100 animals, including: capuchin, tamarin, red howler and woolly monkeys; many species of parrots and macaws; kinkajous and other small mammals such as sloths; and felines, such as a puma.
Because rehabilitation is an important part of what we do, the group of animals we look after often changes, with animals being released or moved to other refuges, depending on the care and environment they need. Merazonia is a rescue and rehabilitation centre true to its name and does not allow tourists into the centre for the welfare of the animals. Therefore, we completely depend on volunteers to help us take care of the animals and cover the costs of their food and medical care.

Looking to participate in a radically green develoment project? Long Way Home is constructing a self-sustainable 18-building green campus in the western Highlands of Guatemala. Using alternative methods and materials, we are empowering the youth of this community, the majority of whom are Kaqchikel Maya, to be the architects of their own futures. We practice several methods of alternative construction including earth rammed tires, earthbags, trash bottles, and aluminum! We also boast a rainwater catchment system with the capacity to store 45,000 gallons of water. As a volunteer, you will join our local construction crew and other volunteers that participate in the construction of the school. Most of the campus is finished and operating a school of grades K-11 with 150 students and 35 local staff, while we continue construction. In Guatemala, there is a dry season (Nov-April) and a rainy season (May-Oct), and we work throughout the whole year. We accept volunteers of all skills and experience levels! It is important to have a good attitude, team player, motivation to help out, and be flexible. Must be able to walk up and down hills at high elevation (7,000 ft). On-site we have a communal kitchen. All the water we collect from rainwater, some of which is filtered for drinking water on-site and at the volunteer house.
Long Way Home's mission is to use sustainable design to construct self-sufficient buildings that promote education, employment, and environmental stewardship. We've used more than 400 tons of trash and over 15500 tires in our construction so far. We aim to end the cycle of poverty through innovation that is relevant to the context.
