Economics for Success at SAITVolunteer with Junior Achievement and inspire Grade 8 and 9 students to make informed financial decisions, prepare for the workforce and start thinking about their future by delivering the Economics for Success program.
What Economics for Success?
Economics for Success encourages students to consider the advantages of staying in school, and learn what’s needed to succeed in today’s workforce. Students will identify the financial costs of independence, develop employability skills and explore possible post-secondary destinations.
We are looking for volunteers with all educational and professional backgrounds who have practical experience to share with students and facilitate the program.
Volunteer Responsibilities
• Work with a volunteer partner to facilitate the Economics for Success program
• Bring practical and personal business expertise to the students
• Help students develop confidence, leadership and critical thinking skills
Time Commitment
• Program and Classroom Management Training (90 minutes)
• One full day on SAIT campus (8:00 am – 2:30 pm, breakfast and lunch included)
• Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation

BFFW is designed for minority students in high school and college (ages 14-25). We have developed and implemented specialized programs to meet the needs of individual profiles and provide services in such a manner that social or economic factors do not limit an individual's access to program participation. “Building Financial Freedom & Wealth” is a program designed to provide minority students ages 14-25 with the knowledge to make informed spending and investment decisions to build wealth while maintaining good financial health. The program duration is 3 months which is compiled of 4 components, 12 – 60 minute lessons.We are looking for volunteers to speak, help with the operations of the program to ensure a smooth program, and/or teach.

The students are assigned a life scenario so they can experience firsthand the real-life challenges of making personal budgeting decisions. After calculating their net monthly income and savings goals, students visit kiosks that represent different budget categories such housing, health insurance, groceries, and utilities. Anyone with real world monthly budgeting experience can become a volunteer. JA Finance Park Volunteers play a key role by helping the students understand the concepts of personal financial planning and career exploration. As a JA Classroom Volunteer, you will have an opportunity to make a difference in a local classroom. You will lead hands-on activities that are already prepared for you and provided by JA in one classroom in grades K-12 of your choice.JA Volunteer activities are offered in different ways... Traditional- which is once a week for 30-45 minutes for 5 to 13 weeks depending on the grade level and program selected. JA in a Day- where all the program activities are presented in one day.
Junior Achievement will provide all volunteers with a one to two hour training session, video training links, along with all of the materials and support needed to have a successful volunteer experience.
The teacher will be in the classroom with the volunteers the whole time and be able to help and provide valuable input on working with the students.

Our purpose is to educate and inspire young people to succeed in a global economy. We do this by:
1) Helping young people use information, apply basic skills, think critically, and solve complex problems
2) Bringing volunteers from the community face to face with students for the simplest of human interaction – sharing, and serving as role models and links to the community
3) Correlating the JA programs to the state teaching frameworks, MCAS testing standards, and the Common Core.
Longitudinal studies have indicated that:
a. In longitudinal studies, JA students were significantly more likely than their peers to believe that they would graduate from high school, pursue post-secondary education, and graduate from college.
b. Students who participate in JA programs develop skills necessary for future success
c. Seven out of 10 agree or strongly agree that participation in JA improves students' decision-making skills.
d. More than seven out of 10 (72%) agree or strongly agree that participation in JA improves students' critical-thinking skills.
e. Almost eight out of 10 (78%) agree or strongly agree that participation in JA improves students' interpersonal communication skills.

Volunteer to Teach Financial LiteracyHigh Water Women's financial literacy program teaches the basics of managing your personal finances to low-income teens and adults in NYC. We recruit volunteers to teach at our program sites and provide training and curriculum materials. The first step in the process is to match you with a program site that suits your schedule. We partner with many nonprofits, schools and other community organizations to provide the program in weekly classes and workshops.
