National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The Alexander County Partnership for Children helps promote this campaign each year by recruiting volunteers who will visit child care centers and family child care homes throughout Alexander county on March 2 and read to the children in their care! Once the volunteer is through reading the book, they will leave the book with the early childhood educator so he or she can add it to the classroom library. This year our goal is to read to 30 child care classrooms throughout Alexander county and touch the lives of around 400 children.
Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

Family Reading Night is an annual free community celebration of reading held at Washington Middle School. This year's event, which typically draws as many as 800 children and adults, will be Friday, March 2nd. The Missourian In Education Family Reading Night promotes literacy with children/youth and their families in Franklin County and throughout the readership of the Missourian newspaper. Family Reading Night introduces children/youth and their families to a well-known author with a large group presentation followed by small sessions hosted by community leaders, heroes, athletes and many others who read their favorite stories throughout the night. Children/youth and their families receive vouchers to use at a book fair which is on site. Our Missourian In Education request addresses the need for promoting literacy in children, young adults and their families. You will be helping Missourian In Education to make a community investment into the future of Franklin and surrounding counties. Today's students become tomorrow's employees and community leaders. Your Missourian support demonstrates to current and potential customers your commitment to civic responsibility and service to the children and community we live in. Our Missourian In Education literacy programs do have a positive impact in the community. Reading improves vocabulary and other reading skills and connects kids to their community. The Missourian In Education outreach programs support family involvement in the community through healthy leisure time activities.Available Shifts

Help give children the powerful gift of new books to help them flourish into strong readers.Multiple dates available to be part of this fun activity.
Volunteers will help students pick out their very own books, assist with the check-out process, and help keep the books organized. United Way has partnered with Scholastic Inc. to offer students at 14 local MPS schools 3 free books at each event to build their very own library at home. Last year over 45,000 books where provided to more than 4,500 children during the My Very Own Library season in participating Milwaukee and Waukesha County schools.
Did you know? The presence of books in a child's household is a greater influence on them becoming a strong reader than their income level! Help ensure that all children have the chance to succeed in school!

New Horizons students live in poverty and do not speak English at home. Their parents are not high school graduates and cannot help their children with homework. Our students are picked up after school by New Horizons buses and taken to one of our six locations and taken home after the program. They are provided help by volunteers with their homework and spend time in a computerized reading lab to help improve their reading skills. Volunteers are critical to encouraging students in their school work and mentoring them in social skills. Last year, 82% of our students were earning a C or better in reading as reported on their grade cards from public school. Volunteers make a huge difference in these students lives!!!
