First we learn to read—then we read to learn! Being a strong reader helps in every class and in every grade. The best way to become a strong reader? Practice. And when kids get to pick out their own books—chances are, they will read them!
For some of our community’s children books are a luxury item. That is why, United Way partners with Scholastic to host a series of book fairs at Milwaukee Public Schools and Waukesha Public Schools called My Very Own Library. At these book fairs held every May and December, each student selects five free books to build their home library.
Each fair needs volunteers and that is where you come in.
Volunteers will be in teams of 2-3 per shift, with a United Way site lead assisting at each school.
Volunteers will:
- Help students pick out books
- Help keep books organized
- Assist with the check-out process of FREE books
- Assist in other areas of the classroom if needed
- No vaccination is required to volunteer at this event.

Imagine a world where every family with cancer receives the care needed for their children – so they have enough time to care for themselves. Now, also imagine a world where every child receives the support they need to cope with their parent’s illness or death.
The Nanny Angel Network (NAN) offers rewarding volunteer positions for skilled childcare providers who are looking to make a difference in the lives of families.
Homework and Activity Angels provide supportive cancer care, by engaging children every week in homework-aid and/or age-appropriate activities to help them navigate the changes that come with a cancer diagnosis and healthily address their emotions.
Nanny Angels volunteers receive specialized training including grief and bereavement and receive the support of NAN’s Child Life Specialist throughout their volunteering time.
